I was wondering what you guys would have to say regarding this post on the Factory Five GTM forum regarding G50 failures on the track due to heat. Check out the thread here:
http://www.ffcobra.com/forums/showthread.php?t=184...

Is anyone familiar with the need for trans coolers or is there something else going on here?

Thanks,
Paul

I have it on good authority from a Porshe specialist that the 6 spd box is up to the job for racing (running just short of 750 bhp without additional cooling).
I suspect theres more to it than may be reported.

Do they have open under rears like we do? We have massive areas under the rear clip for circulation of cool air, I suspect that is our advantage?

Lucky-I think that the entire underbody is covered. Great point! That must be a huge contributor to the heat.

Bear in mind that the box is upside down and as a result the ring and pinion are not siting in oil as in their normal orientation.

I have a pipe that squirts oil directly onto the crown wheel, AND an oil cooler but unfortunately, up until the other day that is, I also had an alien spacer washer that was 2mm thicker than the correct one and under extreme load, ( over 600ftlbs is extreme wouldn't you say? ), there was no longer the necessary amount of lubricating space between the components on the shaft concerned and this resulted in things getting a little hot and preventing third gear from staying engaged. Mr. Bainbridge from BS Motorsport has very kindly pinpointed and eradicated this problem for me and it just goes to show that although I had a very clever and capable fellow build my box initially, his total lack of experience regarding the Porsche G50 may have led to this oversight and Neil is now my preferred G50 man yes

Remember one thing guys, in normal (whatever that is) use, up to a point you probably will not see temps of any great worry. Buy a temp sticker and go drive the car and see what you get. Racing is a different, situation now you are in a condition where you can put all of your power to near constant use. But even then if you run 20 minute sesions as we do here in the states at most time trails how hot will it get. I think a little descresion in starts from a dead stop and not getting to sloppy with gear changes could make a huge difference in the service life of the gear box. lee

I agree, being mechanically sympathetic will prolong the life of both gearbox and engine etc.

If you don't heel and toe, the stress on all parts is greatly increased, particularily on a track.

Cheers,
Martin
