I removed the Stepper Motor from my '98 450 for the first time the other day, and found that it had previously been overtightened to the extent that the base of the threaded portion (where it meets the body) had cracked. I ordered a new one, part no 73312 (as all the info on the web says), and it arrived today. The problem is that although it's exactly the right shape & size, the connections are different. Having found this, I spotted that the original stepper is a 70409 (a number I've not seen mentioned anywhere). As you can (almost) see from the photo, with the connector orientation lug uppermost, the new stepper (on the left) has locating lugs in the following positions:
Top right pin - 12 o'clock position
Bottom right pin - 3 o'clock position
whereas the original stepper (on the right) has them in the following positions:
Top left pin - 9 o'clock position
Top right pin - 12 o'clock position

This means that the only way it can be connected is by turning the mating connector through 90 degrees, so the retaining clip doesn't mate with the lug. So, have I got the wrong stepper, has the new one been made incorrectly, would it matter if I connected it anyway?

Looks like the wrong one as you say where did you get it from?
I bought mine from a LR dealer ERR5199 4.0 car if that helps.

Mine let a force 10 gale into the plenum via the connector

Well, it turned out that mine was leaky too. I could hear a hissing noise from that area, so did the WD40 trick (spray around the suspect area and see if the engine speeds up). It was leaking around the circular joint between the plastic connector housing and the body. I have smeared some silicon sealant around the joint for the moment, and it now seems OK. I'll probably replace it soon, just for peace of mind.
