Hi all

I've just had to free up some much needed money and this meant selling my lovely 20 month old 535d M Sport Touring with all whistles and bells. I'm looking for a cheaper alternative and really want an A6 Avant. I have about 7.5k max to spend and there appear to be quite a few 2.7 bi-turbo engined ones around for this money with between 50 - 90k miles.

Anything to be aware of with this engine? What typical running costs would i be looking at? I really would prefer a good 2.5 tdi but they seem dearer. I have also found a nice looking 3.0ltr petrol one with 87k on the clock.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

I've been running a y-reg allroad 2.7T for a year and half now.

Average 23mpg rural, hurried.

The cambelt job was £372, and the serive was £853 but this included a complete set of discs and pads which came to £416 including labour. But that is a lot of jobs that won't need repeating for a fair few miles.

Also needed a bit of minor suspension work on the mot.

I can't find the invoice for the set of tyres, but it wasn't pretty either.

I've had an '02 model auto for a year and 8,000 miles.

They are quite good value and massively faster, more torquey and more refined than the diesels. The engine and drivetrain should be silky smooth and hardly audible, the turbos are the loudest thing, with a sound of wind blowing. You’ll be lucky to get better than 25mpg though, but they run on cheaper 95 ron unleaded as standard.

The main expense will be turbos if they go wrong, so satisfy yourself about the car’s service history and how they run. regular oil changes are important for the longevity of the turbos. If you put the car in 4th gear at 30mph and floor it then you should notice the turbos kicking in at about 1500rpm.

Cambelt should be changed by 80k.
