Help - Smoke from Battery

I washed my car the other evening. Ran the car for about 1 min to get her out of the garage and proceeded to wash.
About an hour latter I was nearly finished and noticed a very strange smoke coming from under the car! At first I thought is was just steam but then it happened out of the top left hand side of the big bonnet.
Panic stations as it smelt bad, acid!
Long story short... I found the source to be the battery. It was hissing (which is what lead me there) and was letting off smoke. I very quickly disconnected it and the hissing and smoke stopped.
The battery was only replaced last year.
The car had not been running and the ignition switch was off.
There were no funny warnings on the lcd when I did switch the ignition on.
I did notice that water can drip onto the battery from the engine compartment.
I've been told that the battery would swell if there was a dead short and I wondered if it would start if that was the case.
Could this be just the battery?
Anyone know a good mobile auto electrician in the Stevenage area?
Car is off the road so help would be appreciated.

Was the smoke from the battery itself? I.e. did you get the cover off and have a look?
If you look at the sticky at the top of this forum you'll see a reference to the battery charge point / anderson connector on a Tuscan getting hot and causing a near miss - could be the same issue.

Becasue of the position of the battery (tight fit) I can't be 100% sure it came from the battery but the smell was acidic and I've been told by the guy that supplied the Battery (also a friend) that this is the semll of an over heating battery he just couldn't say why.If you look at the sticky at the top of this forum you'll see a reference to the battery charge point / anderson connector on a Tuscan getting hot and causing a near miss - could be the same issue.

I did have the wheel off as well as the battery cover so the hissing and smoke was defo from that area.
There was also the hissing which accompanied the smoke and smell and happened each time just before there was some smoke.
Not likely to be "just" the battery, and not likely to be water either, just not enough conductivity. It is far more likely to have been a serious short somewhere, either one of the terminals or clamps touching the chassis, or a failure in one of the heavier cables or its insulation that has shorted out the battery and caused a lot of heat.
Sounds like it may have been a lucky escape!

Defo a near miss I think. Could have been really bad if I had put it back in the garage and then it caught fire!!! Sounds like it may have been a lucky escape!

OK so I think I need to get the electrics checked.... Aanyone know fo anyone in the Stevenage/Hertfordshire area?
I found a great company on my doorstep in the end and they're mobile.
My problem turned out to be the Anderson connector as in the sticky thread in this forum.
ALL TUSCAN OWNERS NEED TO BE AWARE!!!.
You can find the Company I used on the internet and they a great bunch with the guy who worked on my car being a big car nut.
