Am I chasing a pipe dream? - I want to buy an early doors S1 for £5k and I dont want it to be a nail (funnily enough!!) have seen a few for around that price but also heard e few horror stories (mainly of chassis origin) - I thought this would be the place to get authoritive word on the subject - so over to you...

It remains to be said, that as with all things in life, you generally get what you pay for.
5k now might easily turn into 7k when you need to repair/maintain it. Its only good judgement and knowledge that will reduce your risk......
find someone who knows, pay'm a few quid or a and take them with you....it'l save you in the long run.
Soz if I sound like a Grandad!!
..I paid loads for mine, but I havent had to spend on it since.
Grin Factor 10 all the same though!!

Hi Lordb,

Hi Wannabe,

I saw a few ropey ones when I was looking. I brought mine, an S1 1989 F reg for £6k. It looks great, drives very well etc. Some TVR club guys have seen it and they said good things about it. I had to have 2 new uj's on prop shaft a week into having it but that only cost £180. So, yes as lordb say's be careful and take someone with you or get an RAC/AA check done (£287)but good ones are out there. Some things to check are chassis, suspension, - if bonnet hits floor before fully open then front springs maybe shot, steering, doors dropping.
I smile every time I go out in mine. Love it
