Hopefully v simple........when braking sharply there is a bit of a clunk before the car starts to slow down. If I break gently the clunk is absent. Does this sound like a brake pad has fallen off (haven't been able to take a look yet) or does it sound something more sinister? Any help appreciated!

Could be worn suspension bushes, a loose caliper or something as simple as a pad shifting slightly in the caliper.

Does it do it the first time you brake moving forwards/backwards? The pads do move a bit sometimes. Could be worn suspension/bushes like Peter says though - get it checked.
