So, this bloke I know is getting married in August and, because of work commitments (hers), can manage only 1 week for a honeymoon. This would suggest a short-haul European destination and, due to lack of any other inspiration, Sardinia is looking favorite. Thing is, he knows nothing about the place.

From what research has been done, it looks like the ideal mix of sun, sea, sights, and sfood - a recently-read article about Alghero (NW coast?) pretty much sums up everything required, offering (it seems) Catalan influenced architecture and cooking with plenty to be seen/done pottering around the old town and a decent beach not a million miles away.

Any resident PH Sardinia-philes (Sardines?) care to offer up some pointers? Last week in August good/bad time to visit? Must see/must avoid areas of the island? Alternative destinations slipped under the radar?

TIA

I fly in to Alghero all the time. August it'll be fing hot and possibility of mahoosive thunderstorms the like of which you have never seen unless you've seen one.

There's a great looking go kart track 2 miles north of the airport. Don't know anything else about the place.

Caribean - not in August. Beginning of hurricane season. Don't know about the Maldives though. Think that might also be Monsoon season there.

I lived near Santa Teresa in a place called Capo Testa for a while so know a reasonable ammount about the place. Santa Teresa is a great little town with a massive square where most of the cafes bars etc surround.

Sardinia is the second largest island in the med behind Sicily so its not somewhere you can go and explore the whole place in a week! Takes at least 4 hours end to end.

So first choice is north or south really. I have been to both and I personally prefer the north as trips to Corsica are easy and well worth while (Bonefacio, Porto Veccio etc). To the east you get Costa Smeralda which includes Porto Cervo and the less famous but imho nicer Porto Retondo.

August will be manic though there, lots of Italians on holiday and the beaches will be packed, driving is standard Italian, weather is great - hot but generally a good breeze.

If you let me know what you are looking for from your trip I may be able to give you more details

Hope that helps a bit!

Agreed Sardinia is excellent, wife and I spent a couple of weeks touring round there two years ago. I think the interior was nicer than the coast especially further south. Some excellent Archeological sites, take a look at a few 'Nuraghe' to see how clever the early inhabitants where!

I had 10 days there a few years ago and flew home early. Great beeches and some nice secluded coves but food was tourist fodder and parts were like rural Wales with sunshie and bandits (they have real bandits in land). Loads of empty villages, one decent road.

Might suit a honeymoon if you just want to sunbathe and fornicate.

Very remiss of me, but I failed to thank those that replied for their input.

In the end, all advice pointed to finding a hotel we liked in the north of the island: Finally settled on here, near Santa Teresa Gallura (apparently):

"La Coluccia"

I can now relax and look forward to our first holiday in 5 years!

So a year on and I'd like to resurrect this topic, my wife and I are thinking of Sardinia for a holiday this summer (did I say summer? joke!) anyway over the years we've been to the Caribbean many times, various islands and are looking for a short-haul destination, basically as the OP mention on this thread, some decent beaches, nice restaurants, bit of a town but basically vegging out reading a book and eating out in the evenings! My wife loves Italy and we fancy Sardinia. So any more views opinions? If the OP is reading how was you holiday? Would you recommend the hotel? smile Rich...

Got back from there 2 weeks ago, we booked a week ina hotel called the Oasis in Algehro. deffo will be going back. Algehro is a great place and the food was very good. prices of a beer can range from 6 to 8 euro's a pint, so we stuck to wine. Boat trips were good to the old town is an amazing place if you are in history, and the church is a bit of a must see. Everything was hassle free.

I spent a while working in Arbatax on the east coast a couple of years ago. Hotel was fantastic, great beaches nearby, excellent restaurants within walking distance, and this was in a town dominated by the fabrication yard building offshore oilfield structures.

Was amused by the gunshot damage to the road signs on the road over the mountains. What was not so much fun was my little Lancia Ypsilon struggling on the mountain roads with local nut jobs on my rear bumper whilst trying to negotiate the hairpins!
