Is the SR20de worth modifying?
Discussion
Just thought i'd ask you folks if you have any experience in modifying sr20de engines.
How responsive are they to modifications? The standard specification for mine is 143bhp and i would ideally like 165-170 bhp without throwing wads of cash at it.
Then again, i might just sell it and replace it with a civic Vti.

Remember the Tommy Kaira from Japan, which was sold on and is made here now? That uses the SR20DE and in two tune levels, the highest being 190bhp
I believe its cams and so forth but it does show whats reliably acheivable with these motors. I can't remember what the UK supplier calls them I'm afraid, but I'd imagine the tuning parts are over the counter items...
Whats the motor in btw? I had a Sunny GTi a few years back, with the SR20DE of course, great engine, very similar in character to the XE2.0 Redtop Vauxhall motor imho.

I've actually got an Almera Gti which for some reason, nisssan decided to give less BHP.
It's reasonably "nippy" and is very rev-happy. I woudln't mind getting it to at least the same levelas my old EG Vti.
With the price of gtir sunnys dropping so much your cheapest option would be the sr20det its a fairly straight forward swap and will even bolt up to your gearbox (it can take 300 bhp fairly well) you will need a front mount intercooler set up but apart from that all you need is to pick up a cheap sunny spend a weekend with your spanners and your there.
P.s there was a more powerful almera made in japan under the pulsar badge but strangly was a high revving 1600cc lump!
P.P.s The reason the almera has less power than the sunny is cos it has 2 cats instead of 1 (one built into front pipe extra)
