The (2nd) starter motor on my '01 Cerb 4.5 is about to give up the ghost so I'm looking for advice regarding a replacement. My searches have thrown up 3 options: A Tilton original (or refurb), a Nissan one - from the 3 litre Maxima or one from Lynx AE - a LMS36.

Cheers in advance, James

What are the symptoms? If it is sticking on or not engaging it could just be dirty inside and need a clean. Did mine last month. Not too bad a job to do.

It makes a whirring noise, followed by a horrible metallic grinding before eventually the engine fires. My first one went in exactly the same manner.

Double check your connections to it are rock solid, incl the earth strap to chassis. Try hot wiring direct to starter to rule out your battery is not the cause. I eventually got one from Racing green which has been no problem for nearly a year cost about £330. Good luck

I put a Maxima one in when mine went. Think I paid about 180 quid (this keyboard has no pounds sign...bloody portugues...Lol).

Found my thread...

in my experience, and according to lots of other threads here also, rule out electrical problems first (i.e. make sure you have a good battery first, then get power straight from the battery to the starter to see if theres any difference, if no change , then its mechanical and not electrical.

a starter actually mechanically grinding down to a halt typically involves a grinding noise happening more and more frequently (sounds like someone trying to put a car into reverse without waiting till a car's stationary or not clutching properly) little wisps of smoke coming from the bonnet when starting, then sometimes it will just make a spinning/whirring noise on occasion, like its not engaging properly, a few goes at it and it'll generally work, also i used to push the car a little forward/back and change the gears about to try and shift the flywheel a little to unstick it, seemed to work sometimes, but whatever little tricks you use, these symptoms will just get worse, and eventually, one day all that will happen is there'll be a whirring noise and never anything else, and a dejected looking you inside the car (hopefully at home!)
