Handbrake problems

I'm hoping someone can help. I've searched all posts relating to the above and havne't spotted anything similar to my problem.

The other day my handbrake seemingly snapped...I spent abit of time looking at it yesterday and found that the handbrake when pulled up and held (by hand) engaged the brakes and held the car. The problem is the handbrake itself doesn't click into place and is completely free moving up and down.

I've looked at the handbrake adjuster and can't spot anything wrong with that.

Anyone any thoughts?

you have probably broke / jammer the ratchet mechnisim. Remove the center console and investiage.
