is 599 a good long distance car?
Discussion
I'm looking for a good European cruiser to replace my DB9. The GT speed and the 599 spring to mind however the 599 although rated by many as the top GT car doesn't strike me as being a comfortable long distance GT like the Bentley does. I haven't driven one so I could be wrong... is it enough of a GT car to compliment my 430 spider or will I be frustrated in owning two similar cars?
Bentley gt speed it the best for long distance and with it being the new one it is much better to drive.
There was a magazine article for it in evo, were they did some long distance miles in a selcetion of cars i think. They rated it highly against the DBS the merc cl63amg
and the other car i have forgotten.
Even so the 599 is a good gt. But if it is ferrai you want than go for the 612
it is a better gt car. my freinds dad had one and he said it was one of the best gt cars he's owned.
And he did lots of miles in it.
But he has put in an order for a 599 so he must be happy with it for long distance.

Hi. Mine usually stays in Spain but I've driven it back and forth between there and the UK a few times. It's fine for long distances. You'll never beat something like an S class Mercedes obviously. I think it also depends on where you plan on travelling. On the continent the roads are generally a lot better quality and once I'm on English shores I do find it quite tedious to drive, having to avoid the pot holes and such.
Hope that helps somewhat!

I keep my cars in Marbella and plan to use the new GT for trips to the south of france, italy etc. I've obviously read that the 599 is designed to be a GT car and that its probably the best car on the planet, however its always good to get real user opinions as opposed to a journos.
A friend of mine did Marbella to Turkey this week in his GT Speed and can't sing its praises enough, hence my interest, however I'm still interested in the 599. The Bentley strikes me as being more reliable car over long distances and would perhaps still attract buyers with 30k on the clock - can you really put miles on a Ferrari in the same way? The three ferraris I've owned, 360, 430, 430 have never really inspired me to take them on 5,000 mile round trips and I've always sold them at around 9k miles, but then I've never ventured into the v12's. I've never really bought a Ferrari for comfort and distance, perhaps I should take a leap of faith!

It should have no problem handling the miles. The real question is whether you can handle the depreciation if you plan on keeping it more than 12 months and doing lots of trips in it.
All V12 Ferrari's depreciate like a stone and the 599 will be no different. They are still the car of the moment now but the big premiums have recently disappeared and prices will start to fall by the end of this summer IMO.
Big mileages wont do you any favours come resale time either although that is really unfair because modern Ferraris are very capable of doing big mileages without problem.
If you dont want to spunk loads of cash and still want a top GT car I would look at a 575 with the CTG handling pack. Probably get a good one for under £80K now and it wont have anywhere near as far to fall as a 599.

Not sure if depreciation is really a factor is the 599F is going to replace a DB9? All cars depreciate if you use them as they were meant to - ask Simon George - but that's not why he purchased the car?All V12 Ferrari's depreciate like a stone and the 599 will be no different. From my perspective, a 599 would be a great conti-crusher - with the ability to , ah hum, go large when you so desire. Stunning car, with awesome presence. It's so much more attractive that the 612 - which is a great car (really works when you want to travel briskly) but not the most attractive can penned by pininfarina....
Either way - decisions, decisions.....

Also consider a late low miles SL65, add an Kleemann or DMS upgrade, makes it one of the quickest convertibles around especially 100mph up.Mark.
You can a buy used 612 at £100k but used 599's are still at £210k+??? I am sure the 612 is the far superior long distance cruiser though the 599 is the better sportscar. 612 has a 105 litre tank doing approx 14mpg and loads more baggage space including the useable rear seats - its a no brainer if a long distance GT is what you are after.
I guess the Conti or Conti Convertible is another option along with a late Vanquish S. Also the new California is rumoured to be Ferrari's most useable comfortable car to date.

The 599 has the same tank size and fuel consumption (in actual fact we got slightly higher than this recently on a 1500 mile trip across Europe). Yes it has a bit less baggage space than a 612, but there is still plenty. IMO the 599 is a hugely superior car to the 612. Get an S Class if you want more space, but the 599 is the best car I've ever driven.I guess the Conti or Conti Convertible is another option along with a late Vanquish S. You'd probably be better off posting in the Bentley section for more opinions on the GT Speed.
I'd rather have the Ferrari TBH. Looks better. Faster.
Isn't the 599 much more expensive than the GT though? I don't have a clue how much the Bentley costs but I would guess it's less?
