Devices which contain the positions of fixed speed cameras are fine and perfectly legal in France (although, as an aside, they are illegal in Switzerland). It is indeed the road angel type which are illegal and the fine for carrying one is quite hefty.

Any standard GPS system is legal in France. It is radar detectors that carry a standard 750 euros fine.If you work on the basis "can it detect a mobile radar" and the answer is "yes", then it is illegal and the standard fine is 750 euros on the spot plus confiscation of the device. I have a Tom Tom OneXL and that tells me where fixed radars are so you are all right to bring one.
