Broke down this morning for a while.
Went out for a run and stopped on route to meet up with others.
Came to start up and the engine fired but with a loud blowback through the carb which it does from time to time. From then on it would turn over but with no indication it was even trying to catch.
The others went on and I phoned the AA.
Whilst waiting I took off the air cleaner to see if fuel was getting through. Noticed the electric choke butterfly fully closed then thought that as the engine was warm it should have been slightly open.

It was jammed closed, obviously by the backfire, and took pressure from both thumbs to clear it. Started fine and I had a quick run up to meet everyone at the start of our little drive in the country.

I will as soon as I get my current project on the road.
I have already fitted the AFR meter and it fully confirms how crap the carb is.
The readings are all over the shop.
I'm seeing 8 or 9 at tickover and part throttle.
10 ish in the cruise
And I have hit 20 under acceleration. This last one is not good as I could see a hole in a piston.

You will have to refrain from spirited driving Steve until you have the time to address the problem yes

I'm glad you figured it out Steve. That kind of stuff can get really frustrating. The butterfly is such an simple mechanical device. What was causing it to bind? It should be simple enough to fix I would think.

Bin the choke and then see what the AFR gives! Trust me you won't regret it. Then if that fails go down the HP route!

The blowback on startup just drove it into the housing. Once I had forced it out it is free moving.

Jeez Steve. I have an HP and I get very predicatable/stable readings on my AFR gauge. Never goes above 11-12 under heavy aceleration.

As the HP carb has no choke and is essentially a race carb, do you ever have difficulty starting ?

No problems with starting on the HP- hold the throttle for a minute and the car runs fine. Will always start even after 6 months in the garage at winter!

I wouldn't say starting is a problem but you do have to be skillful with the pedal for about a minute or so. After that it's fine. All these bad experiences with carbs - I think I've been lucky with mine. The only thing I need to sort is the stalling on hard braking and adding the aircon solenoid then I'll be perfectly happy with it. Runs great otherwise.

Cold starting less painfull now.

After binning the choke I'm using the manual choke just like a hand throttle, alter the revs as required. No more blip, stutter, delicate throttle-work. Neighbours probably like the improvement as much as me smile

Russ, you are bordering on being TO considerate to own an Ultima. If you are not able to be a little more selfish you may well have your car confiscated. Now repeat after me; If you don't like it then you know what to do blah
And for all those that say, "Oh, it's all ME ME ME with you isn't it?", you can do no worse than say,"well, yes, it is really, now feck orf or I will start my car" hehe

Strangely enough no, and am still clueless ( about the adulteration I mean ), but then again, stranger things happen at sea,........apparently?

Now wait just a cotton pickin minute there Stuart, you have just bought an Ultima right? Not only that, but a y e l l o w one at that! And now you have the brass neck to claim that you are boring AND sensible, I don't think so old son, not by a long chalk. The only person that may be having the wool pulled over their eyes here is Tim, but that is only because being a vet, he spends a disproportionate amount of time with his head up sheep's bottoms ( being the consummate professional that he is of course ).
