Please someone give me some good advice im in a dilemmer.
I have a mk2 golf with mk3 2.0 16v abf.
Its currently 170 ish bhp. I have recently got a new job and am wanting to through a few grand at it to get some more power.
As far as im aware i could do two things,
Put kr cams, port head, twin 45s its alraedy got ss 4 branch and then i would see aprox 200 + bhp.

But im just wanting to do that bit more and put an eaton supercharger on instead.
But then I dont know what else it would need, and if im only gona get it to 200 hp is there any point i would want it to be at least 250 bhp.And if the cost ran near to 3k i could just buy a 20vt alredy done and transfer my bits onto it?
what do i do
Cheers Darryl

If your going to spend that sort of money, you might want to consider a
20 valve 1.8T from a mkiv golf or Audi. You can get silly power from one without spending too much.

a 20VT is the 'head' option, supercharging your ABF is the 'heart' option.

Search for a thread in reader's cars on edition38.com buy a chap called 'N7NDO' - he's doing this on an ABF engined MK2 currently.

Yo,
If you are serious about charging your ABF then have a look on Edition38.com/forums there are a couple guys on there who have already completed ABF with eaton supercharger conversions. it seams quite straight forward if you run the car on Megasquirt/emerald ECU. a lot of fabrication of mounts and piping is needed and dont expect to be able to buy parts off the shelf just yet. Speak to ALLDUB tuning

you dont need KR cams in a ABF, that trick only works using a 9A short stroke block not on the ABF. As you are running the engine in a mk2 i hope you are still using the mk2 K-Jet managment? if you are you can put some 260* cams in. Autotech (a US company) are doing some VERY good deals on cams at the moment and the exchange rate between US an UK makes them half price of Shricks.

A abf on 45s will NOT produce 200+ on anything other than stand alone management so you will have to upgrade. 170 for a ABF with a 4 branch is already quite good going, a ported and polished head will make a good addition. I take it you are running a straight through centre section as well?. realistically 45s can be more hassle than they are worth due to the amount of setting up needed, i know of several ABF and 9A 2.0 mk2s that can run 180-190ish and are still running K-Jet. Have you had your WUR (warm up reg) modified to increase fueling, this NEEDS to be done on a high spec motor or you will run too lean top end, Stealth motorsport do the mod - requires adding shims to the WUR and you need to a rolling road set up afterwards.

If you a dead set on spending money the best money you can spend if you dont want to do a 20VT conversion would be getting your gearbox rebuild with a 3.9FD and a slip diff as believe me a lower final drive makes a massive difference to in gear acceleration and a diff should allow you to make it round corners!!!

Cheers for your help guys !
I think im gona check out the guys who are currently building an eaton supercharger mk2.

and am going to look into these gear boxes and the gains they provide.

I knew i should have done a 20 vt mk2 in the first place but the garage put me off as he had spent 4k on his and hadnt got it going!
You see i spent a load of dosh putting the abf in and the exhaust and 4 branch so didnt want to change it.

I didnt know i would want the more power.
Thanks Darryl

id suggest looking into a P&P head to get more from your 4 branch and port matching the inlet manifold and throttle body. I also think changing gear ratios would give better real world gains than big power figures. That said a Eaton'd ABF would be fantastic- id contemplate the same if i could justify taking my car off the road again and i knew more about the wiring side of things. I wouldnt be happy taking a car to any old garage to have such a conversion done mainly die to the electrical side of things. Unfortunately a mk2 kJet system is better for running a NA ABF lump but a Digi3 set up as found on a mk3 is perhaps easier to modify to run charger.

a 3.9 or there abouts final drive with your existing ratios should lead to much better acceleration in real world situations as you can run 3rd gear from 50ish instead of being near the top end of 2nd... better on track as well!

DARRYLS REPLY

Yeah the guy whos doing mine happens to have one. Hes done a few.

I would love to know what fuel compresion my abf is currently would it be LOWER than 10.1?

as I WAS THINKING OF DOING AN EATON M45 CONVERSION AT 5 PSI.
I WOULD LEAVE MY PISTONS ALONE.

i GATHER TRE LOWER THE FUEL COMPRESION ORIGIONALY THE HIGHER YOU CAN SET YOU PSI.

Tring to build a block capable of taking boost is always more hassle than its worth. There are plenty engine out there that already run FI that fit.

1.8 20V turbo engine will drop straight in with abit of help from Qpeng. 200bhp reliable all day long.

5psi is pointless. You have to spend the same on fitting the eaton, intercoolers, suspension, brakes etc so may as well make the boost presure one to shout about.

on edition38 check out a purple ibiza running an eaton
