Painting ...gelcoat fibreglass?

Tried to research but hoping you can give me some straight answers to very simple idiots questions.
What is a gel coat on fibre glass?. The kit car that i am interested in has body panels offered in about 5 colours from white to black?

What is the way forward if non of these colours suit..... omit the gel coat at manufacture and then professional spray afterwards?

whats the advantages of gel coat fibre glass as apposed to spraying?

I believe gel coat is complete straight from the mold?

Or is a better way just to spray over the gel coat?

maybe simple questions but i need to phone a friend :-(
