X5 - Advice

Hi All,

I am just after a bit of advice as to the X5 in terms of what engine is best - 3.0i or 3.0d?

Also what sort of real world mpg I can expect from the two? I am used to about 75 miles to £10 of petrol at the moment - I cannot really invisige a petrol X5 being any less than this, but if it is I would like to know about it! :-)

Also, any problems which are common with these models?

Well with petrol now at £5 per gallon you're asking for 37mpg. Not a hope in hell with the
3.0 petrol. Most people talk of mid to low twenties for this version. With my 3.0 diesel I can just average 31mpg in normal driving,but that drops to 27mpg in winter.

...and if you're reduced to buying your fuel £10 at a time then an X5 is probably not the car for you (unless you don't intend to use it much).

Thanks for the advice - test drove all of the range today - 3.0i, 3.0d, and 4.4i - all seem like good engines, and from what I gathered there is not much in it in terms of MPG between the 3.0d and 3.0i - got about 30mpg in the diesel, and about 24mpg in the petrol?

Have the 4.4i overnight tonight, its certainly my favourite - especially its V8 soundtrack! Not seen over 20mpg yet though - guess I will have to save a few more tenners if I go for this one

I think you will se the benefits of the 3.0D after a motorway run.
Around town both require about the same amount of fuel in stop start situations.

Go for the V8, show Darling exactly what you think of him!

24mpg v 30mpg is a 20% advantage to the diesel, plus you'll find anyone selling a petrol x5 will play down the economy. Make sure you're buying one a lot cheaper than the diesel.

Also, how many miles a year do you do?

IF its a used X5 i would go for a 3.0 diesel in this present fuel cost climate.

There is now an "ECO" remap available from certain engine tuners that give you about 30% more HP and a useful tourqe increase.Post 2004 X5 diesels are capable of over 500Nm of torque,and drive really nice with the re-map.Economy is slightly increased(i get 30Mpg round town)as you go through the gears quicker.Motorway economy is noticably increased (37.6Mpg best so far).

I was tempted with a 4.4i running on LPG,but it would still cost a fair bit to run even on that.Plus you have the servicing costs of the LPG system itself which everybody doesnt factor in.I eventually went for the diesel for various other reasons as well.I loved the sound of the 4.4,but it doesnt matter how rich you are you still get pissed off pulling into fuel stations.

In any case,the word "Economy" doesnt really apply to the X5 to any great extent.But still a fantastic car to own.

4.4 without doubt and LPG goes like a train .......150 to nurburgring last year.... you know it makes senss cheaper to run than denzil.

Pglic1 - Not doing too many mile on weekdays, 20 miles to work and back max each day! The weekends is when I will be clocking up a few miles.

Sorry to say this, but my least fav of all of the 3 engines was defo the 3.0D, it an awesome engine and no doubt will return the best fuel economy, but for me persoanlly it just seemed to take some of the X5's characther away? Think I will be going for the 3.0i, it is highly unlikely that I will go for the 4.4i, unless I get a VERY good deal on one :-p God damb that V8!!!

Read this months BMW Car magazine. Real world mileage between a weedy 3.0i and a decent V8 is not so great...can't beat the torqueof the V8.

3.0d with a remap so long as it has the toys, but watch out for rising diesel prices and road tax....diesel may no longer be the cheaper solution unless covering huge mileage, ie 25,000 or more a year.
