Chris Evans - Gotta love that man - £5.5 million for 250 GT
Discussion
Hi there,
Gotta love Chris Evans (Radio 2 DJ). True petrolhead and not too shy with his cash.
He has just paid £5.5 million for a gorgeous 250 GT SWB California Spider, car used to belong to James Coburn.
From Bloomberg: -
"May 19 (Bloomberg) -- U.K. television and radio host Chris Evans bought James Coburn's Ferrari yesterday for a record 7 million euros ($10.9 million) with fees at a sale in the Italian carmaker's hometown of Maranello.
The Nero-black 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder, once owned by the Hollywood actor, had been expected to sell for between 3.2 million euros to 3.6 million euros at the sale conducted by RM Auctions in association with Sotheby's. The previous highest price for a car at auction was $10.7 million with fees, paid for a red Ferrari 250 GTO at Sotheby's Monaco in May 1990, the auction house said.
``I've always wanted a car like this since I was a little boy,'' said Evans, in a telephone interview. ``This is the best of the best. It seems a lot of money now, but in five to 10 years time it'll be out of my range.''
Evans, who attended the auction, said he has yet to drive the Ferrari. ``I've never driven a car like that in my life,'' he said.
This year's Sunday Times Rich List estimates Evans's personal wealth at 45 million pounds ($88 million). Evans, 42, found fame in 1992 by launching The Big Breakfast Show on Channel Four. He now hosts a BBC drive-time radio and invests in property and vintage cars, the Sunday Times said."

All we need now is for him to let the car out in public at a few shows for us to gawp at.
Regards
Tim

Certainly beautiful and if he's got the cash then why not!
I wonder if he knows who he was bidding against at these levels? There can't be many buyers out there at that price level. Two motivated buyers can really drive the price up and I guess the value of a top auction house is that they can put the most desireable cars infront of those with the deepest pockets!
It's a very special car but for less than 10% of the hammer price, you could have a brand new replica made with every part fabricated from scratch but I guess that isn't the point at all.

Wll it not be worth more than he paid for it if he keeps it a while and in mint condition ???I wonder if he knows who he was bidding against at these levels? Doesn't really matter what you pay for a car if you have the money and it won't depreciate. Won't lose a penny.
Much better value than buying a new 612, 430 etc

The fact that the price paid was double the auctioneers estimate indicates that on the day, there were two very motivated buyers in the room (or on the phone) and it only takes two to drive the price up.. If he was the only 'motivated' buyer on the day there is a chance that the car wouldn't have made it to its reserve price.
On another day, two billionaires could have bid the price up to an altogether higher level. Abramovich has just paid £17m for a Lucien Freud after all!
I admire CE for snapping this one up as in % terms, he's put a lot of his personal fortune into it.
The story has already hit the worldwide media and I would guess that it will stimulate interest amongst the world's billionaires and it might start a new wave of record prices but it's not a given and it could just be a freak price.
Back in the late '80's some Japanese collector allegedly paid $10m+ for a GTO but the market price of these dropped to less than half that within a few years thereafter and took a long while to recover...
So what does that do to the prices for 250 SWBs then?...or GTOs?
Personally not my favourite Ferrari by a long chalk and £5.5m?...seems a lot of cash to me...
Evans pitched up at a Christies Bond auction some years ago. I'd bagged myself a second row seat (never like to sit in the first row)and in walks Chris and Billie Piper, both looking the worse for wear and plonk themselves down in the front row, in front of me. They'd just missed the "star" lot - the DB5 used in Goldeneye - and were pursued by a posse of snappers who took a few pix of them before the two left without buying anything. To this day I wonder whether he was there to buy that car or to drum up some publicity.
Me? I wanted the Triumph Stag used in Diamonds Are Forever, but dropped out at £12k! Settled for being in the background for the pix of Evans instead
