Took the car in to Paul last week just before I went off on holiday. It was quite rattly and I thought it was well overdue a tappet adjustment.

Turns out the cams are badly worn and need replacing.

Ho hum, no one said Cerb ownership was going to be cheap biggrin

Quite a bit. I forget how much exactly (I think I have blocked it out of my mind) but you have to change the buckets as well, plus I'm having some other work done at the same time, so the bill is currently around £3k. To be honest, the lions share is labour costs. Apparently the cams take a while to fit and get set up right.

Shouldn't take any longer than a standard tappet setting. Or have I missed something?

You've missed nothing Tim .. setting the valves might take a bit longer than usual because you'll be starting from miles away settings rather than something close, but other than that it's just like setting the clearances on a normal major service, so about 4 hours work and no special tools required other than 2 set squares and a piston TDC dead stop plus the feelers/micrometer for measuring the clearances/shims. Anyone claiming it's an involved technical job is pulling your leg.

£1300 frown oh, and even at that price, the followers didnt even fit properly, had to be ground down or something.

been there a few months back. makes me sick, when you look at the ls v8 engines and see you can get any cam for that engine your heart desires for a few hundred bucks.

Ahhhhh....... Good idea - why couldn't I think of something like that as oppose to forking out nearly £200 on digital dial gauges!

Can't the buckets be linished and re-used?

That's about what Paul said. He never suggested it was anything more technical than "adjusting the tappets, but having to start from scratch". I just think that "about 4 hours" can be safely described as "a while"

Cams and a few other bits and bobs cost me just over £3k last year. Does run very nicely now though.

Meh, these things happen. It's only a couple of grand really. At least it's not as bad as high52kojak's problems frown
