Nope, most pics open, could be the low bandwidth 3G card working at 2G in this remote Italian hotel thats stopping things. I will look when I am back to full-speed in the UK at the end of the week (or in the Milan office tomorrow)

In the picture's defence M'Lud.....there is a very small, faint question mark after the who cares bit.

So more of a question than a statement ....but when driving past easily missed and misconstrued for sure.

Asked an Irish contact about this and they said most of the statistics are late night and either young/drunk/drugged drivers. There are also some badly maintained country roads.

A few years back due to the lack of examiners and the massive demand for driving tests, they had an amnesty and let people who had held a provisional licence for n years to apply for a full licence!

I do know that they have hefty car insurance costs over there

My contact said the "who cares" was probably aimed at the politicians!

Interesting as I am heading over in the summer - may be the Irish PHers know? – I’ll ask them!

Surely that would mean that the text was off centre in the sign and the question mark is in a different font. A later addition perhaps, intelligent graffiti?

I think the whole who cares thing is to make you care. It's a bit reverse psychology, fk with the young peoples' heads a bit to make them think twice about doing what they are invariably doing. I was driving on the ring road around Cork this evening at around 65mph with nothing in the rear view mirror for about half a mile and nothing in front of me, I lit a cigarette and glanced in the mirror again to find a VW polo replete with "L" sticker stuck to the back of the elise so I pulled in to let him pass. The guy driving it looked like he should have been wearing a nappy, and he screamed off into the distance.

I had one thought before I could shoo it from my mind and that, unfortunately, was "statistic".

The vast majority of drivers here are just plain bad. Provisionally licensed drivers are allowed to run riot on the roads and as a result the vast majority of accident involve men in their early 20's. Insurance is no longer as expensive as it was because earnings have risen. The roads can be really bad but anyone with a level of maturity when it comes to driving will 'drive the conditions', most of these guys don't know how.

Hag is spot on with what he said about both the reverse psychology of the sign and about the bad standard of driving due to provisionally licensed drivers being able to drive unaccompanied over here. Thankfully that's about to change soon (but the signs will remainwink ).
