Advice please - Recently on a couple of occasions when I switch on the ignition the fuel pump hasn't started. Immobiliser seems to be ok. Have spark and engine turns over ok but no life from fuel pump. Any suggestions??? Its now died on me!

Hi,
Pull the two leads off the pump and check for corrosion on the terminals, clean with emery cloth.
Gently prise the spade fittings from the protective cover and again check for corrosion and clean,at this point nip the spades and ensure they are a tight fit and cover with the protective covers.
Also check the fuel pump relays are operating, these are normally located in the passenger footwell or under the passenger dash, have a rummage.
Cheers
John

Sue,
Have a look in the passenger foot well near the battery.
You should find a couple of relays which are loose on two lengths of cable.
Silver in colour with a bit of paint brushed across the top of each one. These two relays are notorious for giving trouble. One controls the ECU and lambda sensors and the other controls the fuel pump. It might be worth swapping the two over to see if the fuel pump runs. If it does then there's your fault. Obviously the engine won't run as the relay that's faulty is now controlling the ECU and lambda sensors.
Other problem area's for trouble include the fuel cut off switch under the dash behind the little glove box/pocket type thing. Remove the 2 self tapping screws that hold the glove box thingy up and it should be visible with the reset button facing forward. Push the button from the front and see if the fuel pump primes.
If not check behind drivers seat in the flap behind the door which houses several connectors one of which is the fuel pump circuit. Clean all connector pins on each plug and socket and then try again.
Just a few pointers to keep you going. (or not)
Let us know how you get on.
Cheers.
Paul

Thanks John & Paul for your suggestions. Have done what you both suggested but unfortunately still no joy. Of late the immobiliser seems to be intermittent - sometimes i have to use it and other times, the iginitions starts straight off the key. Could it be an immobiliser fault and if so any ideas on rectiying it?

Will pull the fuel pump off tomorrow anyway and test.

Thanks
Susan

I'll pitch in with my standard 'it could be the immobiliser, this is what happened to me' pitch.

The signals for the starter and the fuel pump both go through the immobiliser. I had a dodgy immobiliser for a while and often when starting the fuel pump would prime but the starter motor would not kick in. A couple of slaps to the underside of the passenger dash was enough to get the starter motor to kick in. I eventually replaced the immobiliser.

It might be worth giving the underside of your passenger dash a few slaps when the fuel pump won't prime as that's about where the immobiliser is.

Susan, apologies if this sounds patronising... do you also have the same problem using the immobilizer plug (which sits on the steering column under the steering wheel) as well as using the alarm blipper?

There is a 'time out' when using the alarm blipper and I wonder if it could be this?

Hey any suggestions appreciated so dont wory about sounding patronising! Have tried this though so another one eliminated!

Ive a feeling it is the immobiliser as its always been a bit dodgy so its probably come to the end of its life - any ideas of where the best place to get a new one and roughly how much they cost???

Thanks
Susan

Hi Susan

have you tried a multimeter at the Fuel pump connections This could iliminate the immobiliser or prove the pump faulty. Something else to ilininate

Have cleaned connections on fuel pump and tested with battery and it was ok. Reconnected wires, tried iginition and car fired. So definitely no power getting to the fuel pump. Relays checked, reset switch checked and fuel pump checked so must be immobiliser.

Any ideas how to get at the immobiliser please??
