MK2 Newbie help!
Discussion
Hello all. I am new to this sort of thing and was wondering if anyone out there could help me out.
I've just bought a 1989 MK2 Golf GTi 8v. I love the car but not the 4 headlamp set up. I'm wanting to convert it to single headlamps as i think these look much cleaner but can't find any information on how to do it!
Is it just a case of buying a single headlamp grille and taking out the inner lights? If so, how do i get highbeams/flashers to work with te remaining outer lgihts?
Sorry for all the questions. If theres anyone out there who knows how to do this or has done it and can give me a quick step-by-step i'd be eternally greatfull!
Many many thanks.

Sorry, can't help much, chap, but as an ex Mk2 GTI owner I've never understood why people want to convert the front to look like a 'mong-spec' 1.3.
Each to his own and all that, but I rather like the quad-light GTI configuration, but I think I'm in the minority!
FWIW, I seem to remember the headlight loom in my Mk2 had separate relays for dipped/full beam on the outer 2 lights, and full beam on the inner 'driving' lights. You may get away with just not having any 'inner' lights but I'm not a Mk2 electrics expert!

Hello mate.
If you want to go to a single headlight set up you do exactly as you said, just buy a single lamp grille and remove the inner ones. The main headlight is double function so will do dipped and main beam.
Single headlights imo looks really cool on the Mk2 and gives a more retro look.
Im trying to get a pic of my small bumpered 16v when I changed to single lights but photobucket is blocked here!
Edit - just found this on ClubGti, hope it works:

personally i hate single headlight badgless grills as they create too much no mans land between each light.
I do like single headlight look but i always keep a black or chrome badge. Below are pics of my pair :-), i do want to try painting a red surround though to give the single lamp grill a GTI look. BTW I always run a single set up in spring summer but a quad set up in the winter as you really need the extra lighting. One thing golfs are known for are lame headlights!
