How many people have modified the oil filter arrangement so that the filter sits in the normal way, not upside down, thus eliminating the problem of oil spillage when changing it?

Has anyone got any pics?

I reckon if I rotate the housing over and raise it about an inch then I should be able to get the filter on and off without too much hassle. Or is that just too damn obvious and Im missing something???

Sorry, 390SE, 1985 Vintage, just done a full chassis restoration on it, its now got fully adjustable suspension, new brakes, diff overhaul etc. Full engine rebuild, and rebuilt gearbox, awaiting a dyno run yet. We put the engine back in last week, just plumbing it all back together at the moment.

Have always thought the filter would be a bugger to change when full of oil, so thought in the interests of making it easier for us and future owners that its worth turning it over so its the right way up!!

I think where this was discussed previously, the importance of having the correct filter with anti-drain/syphon valve fitted was mentioned. smile

Just scanned thru a few 390se on the classifieds and found this :

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/377191.htm

Oil filter clearly the right way up .. pointing to the sky

Or do you want it to point at the floor..

I find when I change mine I loose very little.. old newpaper around it .. spin it off quick and then empty the oil into an oil catch container..and then use a clean rag to clean up.

I just turned mine 180°. That was 13 Years ago, when i had the chassis out for galvanising.
No problem and much easyer to change without a big mess.

I modified mine a good few years ago. 1985 390 SE.

I basically mounted it at the front nearside of the engine bay, moved the oil radiator, added an oil thermostat (no thermostat fitted out of the factory - the oil was well overcooled), an oil temperature gauge and rerouted the swan neck/top hose under the big oval hole to avoid the microtome effect of the bonnet opening and scraping away the top hose bit-by-bit.

No problems at all since then with oil changes or with oil running back into the sump overnight.

Decided to rotate it 180 degrees (so it points at the floor) on a new bracket then simply remove the two pipes off it and extract the filter and bracket. Will hardly spill a drop all being well, and doesnt need a fancy anti-syphon filter neither then.
Thanks for the advice

I can't understand why they are not all fitted this way up. When I change my oil I undo the feed and return pipes, plug the ends then remove the filter and housing together and swap the filters over away from the car. So easy, so mess free!

Marginally longer, but less messy and you dont need the special anti-syphon filter neither. I can use a good quality coopers filter like I do on the rangie.
