E39 530i Fuel economy?

Mine's an E39 - 530i Auto (2002 year) - Around Milton Keynes (stop/starting at roundabouts) I get apprx 20mpg. M/Ways I can average around 33 - 35mpg. But with a mixture of roads I suppose I average between 24mpg - 26 mpg. Have seen as little as 370 miles and up to 415 miles per tank (68 ltrs - 70ltr tank!).
Milton Keynes is no good for fuel economy, so you really shouldn't get anywhere as bad as I do, unless you live round the corner..!
Edited to say - that's with the air-con always on, have only ever turned it off once to see if the LED goes out..!

I used to have a 2003 E39 530i auto and for my normal commute 40 miles each way 35 of which were motorway I was averaging 26 MPH.
On a long run I could perhaps get up to 31 or 32 but it would quickly fall away around town.
That's also with climate on (unless it was below 5 degrees which I read somewhere was the right thing to do).
That's also using cruise wherever possible & 'swift but sensible' ;-) on the motorway
I've now got an E60 530d auto and happily get 36 on average and 42 or more on a run!

Blimey - I thought I was getting poor mpg, seems like it's the norm then...
Anyone else get really poor wear on the front tyres. I get both outside and inside edges worn down, loads before the middle. I don't seem to get more than about 8k to 10k out of a set of fronts, compared to apprx 12k to 15k for rears. I've tried playing with front psi, currently running 42psi (mainly driving 1 or 2 up only) up front to try and help the wear, seems to be making no difference.
Never experience such an uneven tyre wear across the width..?

On my E39 530 petrol auto, I can get to 30 mpg on a long run if I drive like a vicar, but I never do.
28 mpg on the UK motorway, 22 mpg in town, giving a 50K miles
average of 26.5 mpg.

I get 15K or more out of my tyres, longer out of the
front set obviously. 36 PSI on the front, 42 PSI on the back,
checked every month.
Reset the economy guage as I pulled onto the A38 dual carriageway from the filling station today with the engine already at full operating temperature. Engaged 70mph on the cruise which is a true speed of about 66mph.
13 miles later.... the display was reading 42.4mpg.
Then went into town and back out again so was on a far less impressive 36.5 by the time I got home but even so... these engines are remarkably efficient when driven carefully and at operating temperature.
Shame they suck when cold and most of my driving is from cold!
