Hello all. Long time lurker, first time poster.

The guy i'm thinking of buying this car from tells me the exhaust on it was a lotus aftermarket exhaust fitted at the factory. Could this be correct? It looks awful with the two empty spaces where the standard exhaust would go..?

What empty spaces? looks normal on the picture - exhausts on the Toyota engined cars exit through the diffuser as pictured. If it's a Lotus after-market job then it must be a stage 1 exhaust.

Given the current exchange rate that car seems crazily expensive. A decent 111R private sale for a car that age is about £17-18K.
How hard is it to import one from Engalnd into Ireland, I doubt its going to be £10K plus.

We have a thing called vrt(vehicle registration tax) in Ireland. Here to register the car the government stealth taxes you 25% of the open market value of the car in Ireland. A disgusting piece of work. (It's 30% if the car is over 2000cc)

Difficult to tell what the exhaust is but if it's a Lotus factory fit it looks like a Stage 1 exhaust. That certainly isn't lightweight! I think it's significant;y heavier than almost every other one on the market!

As far as the position of the exhaust that's the normal through diffuser position on all R's. You're probably thinking of the earlier side exit exhausts on the Rover engines Lotus. You can change the exhaust over (I did) but you need to budget about £500+ for the exhaust, replacement grilles etc.

Why would lotus fit a stage one exhaust that may be significantly heavier than a standard? Is there any notable performance advantage with a stage one exhaust? or is it just a noice gimmick?

I don;t think it's any heavier than a stock Lotus exhaust but it's a lot heavier than most aftermarket ones, ie. Larini, 2Bular, Quicksilver etc. All of which give a much nicer noise. As for performance, unless you match the exhaust, manifold, induction and a remap you won;t see anything. It's all just about the noisewink
