Using a Volvo 5-pot in RWD configuration
Discussion
Hi folks, can anyone tell me what gearboxes/bell housings will mate to a Volvo T5 engine such as http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Volvo-850-S70-V70-C70-T5-eng... to drop it into an RWD car?

the red block is the old 4pot engine. its a very strong unit. PPC did a feature on it a few months ago. also there is a guy on here building one up i think. they where desgined for RWD platform.
the White block is the newer 5pot engine, as used in the Volvo T5's and the Ford Focus ST.
cheers

Chris,
The gearbox you're after is called the M90. It's a good box that is impossible to get spare parts for- it's believed to have been made by Getrag. The only real weak point of this very strong box is the third gear synchro. Weld it up and it'll then take just about anything you can throw at it.
As correctly stated above it was found in the 960, which is a whiteblock engine. These whiteblocks are modular engines, of which the T5 is a part. I've just helped a friend put one in a 740, and you notice that the 6 pot engine (you have to adapt 6 pot stuff to the 5 pot in a 740/940 swap) is just a 5 pot with another cylinder tacked on the end.
If you want to go over 300hp you want to think about rods and pistons, as rods are the weak point. Join the turboricks forum and use the weak dollar to your advantage- around £50-£60 for a forged H beam (Carillo style) rod suit you?.
The 5 pot is a good engine and has been seen making over 1000bhp.
