So, did Top Gear circuit this afternoon blah, blah, very jolly.

By the back of the circuit office a whole sea of contractors and folk came out to ogle the wasp coloured bellowing Ult. Bad news was that I had to do a five point turn on a slope to avoid cars and stuff. However due to the p0xy carb I stalled it twice. (not my incompetance of course)

What was so wonderful was that on each stall there was great hoots of laughter and smiling faces. laughlaughlaugh

Seems one of the highs of Ultima ownership is that nobody reacts negatively and understands it's just a bit of fun. Wot joy!!!!!!

Had I stalled in the old TNPmobile there would have been some VERY rude gestures (you know the ones I mean)

Never mind the lap time Stuart, no body here is interested in that ( only kidding of course, what was it? )
Has no body told you that in the instance that somebody, ANYBODY may laugh at an Ultima owner stalling their carbureted car, it is compulsory to skin them and dip them in a vat of salt. I can see that we are going to have to toughen you up a bit here mate hehe
By the by, what was you lap time?

Lap times weren't of interest yesterday - don't think I ever actually used full gas as I was absolutely intent on being as mechanically sympathetic as possible. It was an experience to find out whether me and the Ultima can have a long and meaningful relationship together, learning about the car and finding out if it had any foul and nasty habits etc.

The car had wibbly wobbly full soft road suspension settings and some horrid Goodyear fronts. Apart from lurid, squeally understeer the car was impecably behaved. Considering the horses, awesome rear grip.

My half hearted best effort was 1.29 I think, but Graham says the car is easily capable of 1.20 with some tyres and tweaks. Driver training and some left foot braking tuition from the Stig to quell the understeer very much needed if I am to acheive a 1.20.....

Hitting the 6000 rev limit chip top speed was 170 and still accelerating like a good un smile

How did you find hammerhead? I had buckets of understeer there, but found it was driving style rather than car set up. Now when I set the car up for the corner, I turn microns after full breaking at the point where the fronts have the best grip they are going to get, feed the power on as the car starts to pitch up and then slide the back out to get round. Works for me.

Pete,

Most of the understeer and all the other errors due to totally crap technique on my part. (I'm still a novice) It's going to take some serious effort to catch you chaps up!!!!!

But kinel don't these cars go eekeek Mines just a cooking road car - what the heck must the 720 demonstrator be like - gasp.

My laps were headed by the organisers Caterham, who kept a chain of cars behind him. The only way to attack any corners was to hang back and catch up. But being a figure of 8, this was frowned upon!!

Needless to say, we worried the Caterham off the track in a cloud of tyre smoke!!

I've video, so if I get a spare moment I'll knock something up.

Should have mentioned there was a serious lack of grip from the front Goodyears on heavy braking. R888s would have helped considerably.

Just the fronts locking up? Hmmm...scratchchin bias? I know the fronts are suposed to lock first, but have you tried windng it back 'til the rears lock aswell and then winding it back just a tad to the front? You should call the factory to see how they set it.

The difference between Goodyears and a road legal track tyre is staggering. Just you wait and see.
