Larking about with my teenage son the other night he fell over and I fell on top of him side on and the side of my chest hit his knee which was coming up - I immediately felt a sharp pain and presume this is what I've done as two days on, the pain is still quite bad and shows no sign of going away - in fact it's worse today than yesterday.

Yesterday was 'mild discomfort' as they say ...

The interweb says you can't do anything but rest ... is that right? Apart from dosing up on the painkillers ...

Assuming it's just fractured, then unfortunately only time will heal it. Might be worth getting an X-ray to make sure there aren't any sharp bits of bone floating around near your lungs.

Sounds like you have just bruised it.

Not a lot you can do even if it’s cracked.

Bloody hurts though!!

I'd get it X-Rayed just to be on the safe side, be a bit stupid if you didn't bother and then coughed and punctured a lung.

GF has just done this, borken in two places. This happended about 3 weeks OK, x-ray comfirmed plus nothing they can do except take pain killers. Yes she is in lots of pain and the sex is uncomfortable for me anyway. The said approx 6 weeks healing time.

Try not to sneeze, it will really hurt if you do! Takes about 8 weeks to heal even if it has a slight fracture!

See your GP for decent painkillers, but X-rays are not usually required as they do not change the treatment or outcome, so best to avoid unnecessary radiation exposure.
If it is broken it will take 8wks to get better, if it isn't broken 3weeks

How come it takes so long for ribs to heal?

I broke my leg and it was fine after a couple of weeks?

You have to have hover sex, if you know what I mean. My triceps are huge now.

Yes, on a regular basis whilst karting due to an ill fitting seat.

Only time will heal it, I used to have to bandage my ribs up REALLY tight & O/D on pain killers with the cracked ribs to enable me to carry on racing.

yes Cracked 2 whilst playing fooetball! Worst pain i have ever experienced. That was 7 months ago & i still get the odd twinge from them. Sleeping is very difficult especially when you forget & roll over.. yikes that hurts alot.
You will be given "diclofenac" painkillers if you go to the doctors. They are the strongest you can get apparently.

I'm going to guess but I reckon it's because there's only a blood supply to the bone from one end (IIRC) and it is difficult for the relevant checmicals to get to the injury.

Broken ribs don't show up well on xray and it's a dose of radiation you don't really need. It could be dislocated though, so it's worth getting checked as it might need manipulation.

Takes about 6 weeks to get better.

Cheers,

FT.

Hmmm sounds resonable. Also sounds like recovering from a properly broken rib would take a while. More than a few weeks anyway!

I did one when on the lash in Plymouth years ago. I crashed on a mates floor that night. I really knew about it when I woke up & tried to get up! Took a few weeks before I could get up in the morning without it being a real pain avoidance mission.

Bruised I'd guess.

I've fractured ribs in the past and it is very uncomfortable, and very painful if poked (as you do)

My Birthday is during the winter, and I fractured 2 ribs in a go karting smash. I was also suffering at the time from a very bad dose of Man Flu. Believe me, the worst pain I have ever been in was coughing or (even worse) sneazing, with fractured ribs - cough-cough-atchoo-AHHHHHHHHHH-FUUUUUUUUCKIN'ELLL!!!!!

I got a hockey ball in the ribs and that effing hurt, gf is convinced one is cracked, but she keeps forgetting this fact and 'accidentally' hitting and prodding the area, she has been close to being buried under the patio when she did it the first time.

Also it bloody hurt when sneezing or coughing, but I did have cocodamol (sp) and that took the edge off.
