My group are heading down a few days before the race kicks off to get settled, but are keen to get an view as to some options for "days out" around LM. This has, in prior years, included St Malo, quality driving roads/copious video footage of the hoonage, "treasure hunts" in local villages and karting close by. However, we are keen to keep up the impetus with some fresh ideas, so any ideas appreciated? It would be a full day (likely Thursday so before parade/Arnage etc), with onus on driving, and hopefully including a good luncheon.

For a good lunch I can highly recommend Chinon. There are several ways of getting there from LM and they all involve some fabulous and deserted roads. it doesn't get much better than this:

N138 to Chateau du Loir
D38 to Chateau-la-Valliere
D749 then D57 to Langeais
cross the river and onto D7 to the end
D749 into Chinon

Come back up the D34 to Chateau-la-Valliere

The restaurant I would such is called Au Plaisir Gourmand and is at the western end of the main town at 2 rue Parmentier. They do a fabulous set lunch for about 50 euros and the wine list is to die for. We've been about six times and never had to book for lunch but do make the effort to look prosperous - chinos rather than jeans if you get what I mean.

Chinon has the chateau and nearby is Fontevraud which, if you like medieval stuff, is fantastic. Richard 1st is buried there, as is his wife and father. The place is very well worth a visit.

Having done LM a few times (28), I think we have pretty well done all the stuff you can do in a day so we have cut back the holiday again this year to Thursday to Monday. Given one day more, lunch at this place is what I would do (and may do on Friday actually). The other brilliant place to go is Villandry which is my favourite chateau.

Thank you Richard - that sounds absolutely spot on, especially so given the quality of the roads.

Do let me know if you do it and what you think of the restaurant - I love it.
