The factory warranty (2yrs....not much eh?) on my car runs out in a few days. Guess how much for an extended warranty on an Exige S?

I'll put it in perspective; in 2006 I purchased a 2yr warranty for my '04 111S and that was £599.

The current warranty for such a car for 2yrs is £630. Quite reasonable, thought I.

Go on, guess how much for 2yr extended warranty on Exige S...?

£925.

All those 'yota big end bearings going and blowing up engines. Oh well, at least it's nice n' reliable so you won't have to worry about anything.

Get it in for a service quicksharp and get anything done which is picked up!

It's service was finished about 2 hours ago, along with a few warranty items biggrin

I think I'm going to put £1k under the bed. It doesn't exactly show confidence in their products, does it?!

i think they may be underwritten by an insurer and based on value of the vehicle - you buy a £40K car and an aftermarket warranty is usually £1300ish a year etc so I guess its par for the course these days

They really ought to give a 3yr warranty though by now...or at least lift the mileage limit...I remember my 2002 car and early 2004 the exhaust rotted though, and Id done 35K miles at the time...then I found out it was a 2 year/20K mile warranty so Id actually gone past in about 9 monthsfrown

Whilst its a healthy amount I don't think it is 'that' much compared to extended warranties for other brands I've heard of. MB wanted £1200 for an extra 2 years on the wife's SLK IIRC. If you think about it at main dealer labour rates £1000 isn't going to go that far.

Having said that I think you're probably wise to just stick it away and earn some interest on it. Also the fatc that the warranties are still only 2 years is truly ste.

Try www.csma.uk.com/motoring/ for after market warranty, although it only has a £1000 max claim limit! Cost around £500/year, but covers just about everything including MOT failure and electrics.

if it's a "good warranty" i'd say £900 seems ok.

please remember whilst they are relativly simple beasts, they sure can be restrictive to work on sometimes, which usually means they are labour intensive. Which in turn, if carried out at a main dealer means expensive.

the problem with AA and aftermarket, non-manufacturer warranties with like £1K limits, is they are fine if you just have a 4 or 5 yr old Mondeo etc (what they are designed for) ...but if you have something with more expensive parts etc then it wont do.

In one year I had 2 warranty jobs on my Audi RS6 that cost £4K each !...thank feck for the £1300 extended warranty...another year I got bit with a Volvo S80 T6, just out of warranty, had been reliable, so I didnt pay the £1100 they wanted....cue some bills that year for £2k and £1.5K etc

its gambling really, or like insurance, you can pay it in the hope that you dont need it etc...or not pay it, put it in a bank...you may get luck for a few years and have a few grand in the bank..you may not...but once bitten, twice shywink

It's a good point, bogie. Especially with main dealer labour rates and such it doesn't take very long at all to get a bill of a few k if something goes wrong; especially in a car like the Exige which is difficult to get access to.

Having just been offered a new job about 3 mins ago, I think I'm going to splash out on that warranty....

Thanks for the advice!

Hi Tony, I have just extended my exige s warranty with lotus. Have you considered getting 3 years instead of 2. Even if you do not intend keeping the car that long the warranty as I understand will be transferable, making the car a more appealing purchase. Price breakdown as follows

1 Year £740
2 Years £925
3 Years 1065

Hi Nick, thanks for post.

I had considered it; as always it's "just that bit more" and I was wondering whether to go for the full 3yrs or not.

Not much extra when you consider what you're getting (warranty in year 5 of the car).

Hmmmmmmm.

Thanks biggrin (...for making me spend more money hehe)

Yee haa!

that's not bad at all. 1065/3 = £355 / yr which I'd say is pretty cheap if you intend keeping the car

is the exige more than the elise then?

I'm coming to the time where I need to decide whether to extend the warranty or not?

That's a bargain.....pays your money and have peace of mind!!!!

To put it in perspective; my wifes 911 was £895 for ONE year. My Z3Mcoupes ended up being well over 1k.

This is silly cheap, so don't argue!!!!!

You just said it yourself. A Z3 with a near 10 year old "proven" M engine was more than a 911 with 40 years tuning and heritage. A toyota corolla engine with a blower does not command that kind of money!

Don't get me wrong. These are great cars but they are not in the same league in terms of engine engineering as Porsche, BMW etc.
