E30 325i rear back-plate replacement - tips?

E30zone appears to be down at the moment but I'm sure someone here knows.

I need to replace my old rear back-plates, is it possible to just slide the hubs out without removing the wheel bearings and drive shaft - or does it all have to come to bits?

i.e. can I just undo the 30mm driveshaft nut on the hub and the hub will slide off?

That nut needs a huge amount of force to get it turning.. you will need a long bit of pipe to put on your breaker bar.

Then the hub can come of.. but it may leave its bearings behind and then you will need to replace the hub and bearing assembly.

It all has to come away before you can replace the backplate.

Just realised what I put.. you dont need to replace the hub if it leaves the bearings behind.. its the front ones that do that!

I guess then the friction fit of the inner race to the hub trashes the bearing when pulled, so I need the driveshaft out of the way to press out the bearing from the swing arm.

I just need a impact socket for the 30mm nut, as I already have an IR231 nut-gun that I use for shearing various things off with

I think I'll do the torx bolts on the driveshaft by hand though... I was hoping to avoid them
