hi

i have just joined the forum....great to be here !

i have been checking the engine oil levels after using my car (mk4 golf gti 1.8 150bhp 2003 reg) and i can see some steam coming out of it when i open the oil cap.

also i have been regularly checking the oil levels and the oil at the dipstick is clean i mean its not dark or with any cr*p like that etc..

now is this steam coming out is normal or is this a problem with the engine???

thanks in advance for your replies.....

cheers

Are you sure its steam and not oil vapour

Best test to do is to hold a small mirror or piece of glass near to this "steam" and try to get some to settle on it, when it condenses onto the mirror/glass you will be able to tell what it is by feel. Im sure you know the difference in feel between oil and water.

If its oil, no worries

If its water, you might have a problem

i think its the oil not the water coz i just had an oil change at vw dealer about 2 weeks ago. so you tell me how can it be water.

also the oil level in the dipstick is fine, i mean it there where it should be.

let me know

thanks for the reply !

From the title of your post, you mentioned "STEAM", which is very basically made from water. If you know what is actually coming from your engine and it definitely is oil, then its not steam.

Then stand-easy, its not problem rolleyes

I dont think its owt to worry about. If taking off the oil cap when the engine is hot the oil normally has a bit of heat rising.
Does the temp gauge sit at 90 degrees?

they should normally do a check before the remap to make sure the car is fine. (probably a vag.com scan) then a rolling road test
