I've been considering swapping my Jag X Type for an S60 D5 SE Auto much to my wifes amazement. She proudly announced this fact to the guys at our local volvo specialist today (while getting her 850 serviced) and they said she must tell me to go for the Euro 4 model. What is the Euro 4 model and how do I recognise one?

It basically means the engine conforms to the European Euro 4 standard, to do with emissions and fuel efficiency. All current engines comply with this and have done now for around 3 years I think, lost track of when they changed. I can’t even remember if it was when the current D5 of the time was re-badged the 2.4D as it developed 163bhp and the newly badged D5 has 185bhp. Blame old age for crap memory!

EU4 refers only to the pollutant levels from the engine.

The current diesel comes in 2 formats
2.4D 163bhp
D5 185bhp
no idea how you tell them apart.

Note the old D5 was "only" 163bhp and had a dark cam cover.

In the next year/two Volvo are putting a 205-210 diesel in the range line up.

Just to complicate things a new 2.0D has been introduced in the current V70 range with 136bhp.

I have an '06 S60 D5 SE Geartronic, (185bhp), and it's Euro IV, (all the 185 bhp D5's with the light grey engine cover are, I believe), and I love it. SE is a good level with great interior and superb sound system. Wonderfully competent long distance cruiser that can serve up some fun as well. Geartronic 'box is a 6-spd gem. Full auto or tiptronic-style playtime. Couple of things to be aware of :

The turning circle is big - not Titanic but bigger than you'd expect. You do get used to it.

The factory fir Pirelli P6000 tyres are awful and induce a huge amount of tramlining. THe car will happily wander around over white lines - even in the dry. Continentals ot Goodyear Eagle F1's etc cure the problem. Don't be put off if your test-friver wanders. It's the tyres, not the car.

Other than those two points it's a gem. Just returned from a 1700+ mile trip to Europe in my S60, (hence the delay in responding), and it was a wholly enjoyable, and comfortable, experience. Will happily cruise the Autobahns at 110 - 120 mph all day long, (probably even faster but I have my own limits), at which speeds you can still hold a conversation. Over the whole trip my calculated economy was just a tad over 40mpg which, considering it's not a light car, the high Autobahn speeds and some "fun" on a couple of Swiss passes and Black Forest switchbacks is pretty darned good, I think.

Having driven an X-type there is no comparison, IMO, but yopu may find the Jag a bit more chuckable. Would I recommend an S60 D5 SE G/tronic / Absolutely. Would I buy another one ? Yes sirree. Hope this helps.

s60 d5 se geartronic is a superb car. if u have 18 inch wheels on it though with 235 tyres the turning circle is appalling but it makes the car look much better. the torque is great, the whole car feels like a quality product. if you get one get the s60 d5 with 185bhp, as its nippy off the lights , can do 120mph all day long, the soound system is amazing with this pro logic dolby, and there is a button on the dashboard connected to the sat nav call centre which u press and tell the girl on the phone where u are going then she directs you, much better IMO than having a screen in the dash. i went in my boss's jag x type 2.0d the other week and the whole car is crap compared to the volvo by far.
