E46 Convertible audio is terrible

I've had the car a few days now and i must admit, the audio quality from the business head unit is very poor.
There is no bass at all from the speakers when i play a CD and only a little bass if i changed over to a station such as Kiss 100 (not that i listen to it, just wanted a station that increased the bass on the music that they play).

To cut to the chase, would it be better to upgrade the speakers (replace what is already there and maybe add a small sub in the back) or invest in a new headunit, so that the audio that is heard actully fills the car with a more warmer sound and bass that i can actully hear.
At the moment all i can hear is mostly high and mid range.

Hmmmm, where do you want to start, this is not an easy one depending on budget and what you want to do to the car.
