So S6 vs RS6 ( circa 2002 )

I had an RS6 for a year - very expensive to run, and nice to own, but in all honesty, I think an S6 would have done the job of quick reliable, practical transport at a much cheaper price !

IMHO, while the S6 is an extremely competant all rounder, I wouldnt regard it as a particularly 'fun' car. The RS has the grunt and noise so if it was to be an only car, Id save up for the purchase (and extra running costs) of an RS.

You may struggle finding an nice S as there are an awful lot more RS6s around from 2002 onwards which is understandable as the price differential at the time wasnt immense. Id have had an RS from new. However, these days an S6 does provide an awful lot of subtle quick car for a reasonable amount of pennies.
