Most days as I pop in and out of the forums, PH generally runs really well; but at approx 6pm every evening it just dies on it's arse...

When you all go to the pub at 6pmwink and turn the lights off, do the hamsters powering the servers go to sleep?

The problems we are having at the moment are all traffic related, so are worst at busy times.

Evenings are worst and sometimes we get a bit of a spike at lunch times or at 4:30 in the afternoon (especially on fridays)

At the moment the searches are turned off as these cause a particularly high load on the servers, so things should be a little better than they have been and we have another set of optimisations in the works which should get us closer to a permanent fix

Serious question - have you looked at sorting out the search once and for all with a Google appliance? Much cheaper than you might think.

Would forcing the user to search one sub-forum at a time help, I don't think that would bother users much, in fact it may be more efficent for users, less results to wade through. Also have a look at something like http://www.fastsearch.com/
