Is it me or does there seem to be a lot of Monaros changing hands at the moment? Looking at the classifieds the prices are through the floor (VXRs < £18k). Jamie is so desperate he's advertised his car twice

I hope things level out soon as I'm terrified of seeing my first Chavved up CV8 with some yoof slumped behind the wheel.

Bearing in mind the 6.0 VXR's were £28k new, after 3 and a half years are selling at £18k ish isnt bad depreciation in that time considering the size of the engine, personally thought (and was hoping!) they would be well under £15k by now.

The whole monaro range and the VXR8's didnt drop a penny in the guides this month, can either mean depreciation has levelled out or they are due a massive drop next month but they have not been going down much at all over the past 6 months so all looks good.

good, I feel better now. Did you read this month's star letter in Evo? Some bloke lamenting how he sold his Ro for an mx5 because of fuel and VED. Sad tale.

I've contemplated selling - but only because of fuel/tax. I really can't justify keeping her - yet she's still in the garage. For now. frown

Tax is annoying yes but I run a cheap little car to work and the shops, Ro is for nice days out only... even more so now with fuel so high. Unless you earn a fortune I cant see the point in running one everyday if only because some idiot will open their door in the carpark and hit the side of it... then theres the courts to deal with and the fines for assault... ranting

I don't think there are any more than usual on sale. Fewer dealer Monaros at them moment and a thus more sold privately.

My last visit to greens about a month ago, they had 4 in stock. A black VXR500, two silvers and a red (all VXR models may have been 3 silvers, I just remember thinking 4!!)

I had a bloke chat to me in the car park only last night saying "nice car" and wishing that he could afford to get one. I said that they're cheaper than you think as they don't hold their value very well. He smiled and said "I'll have to look into that then"

There does seem to be a lot for sale at the moment. Certainly more choice then when I was looking. I work in IT, but I'm not well off by any means. I certainly can't afford some of the mods you guys talk about, but I can afford petrol, tax and any little surpises that pop up, so I'm keeping mine for as long as I can keep hold of it. I love it.

sounds suspciously like me! I am considering the mx5 not for ved or fuel but because after trying out many modern convertibles I dare say it is one of the best packages there is.

My Monaro has had very little use over recent months, and I have thought there is little point in keeping it. Part of the reason is that my everyday V6 Omega is handy for any journey, whether it is the shopping run or 300 miles, and I just use that instead of moving it out of the way so that I can get the Monaro out.

However, my current plan is to replace the Omega with an economical tiddler that I won't want to do longer runs in... and keep the Monaro and use it more.

I do share S600VXR's concerns about car parks though, which is why I always have a cheaper daily user. I've already fallen out with a couple of fellow commuters at the station car park due to their 'careless' parking/door-opening.

I drive a C1 daily - great little car but I ALWAYS feel like I should be driving the Monaro (especially when you see a 'Ro and can't wave!).

Swings and roundabouts really - love the 'Ro but would like something a bit more fitting for every day use. Still, it's not for sale and I doubt I can get the same amount of car for the money!

When I originally started this thread I was worried about the Ro becoming the choice of the discerning Chav. However, I now realise that they will never be able to afford to run it.

It will become a worthless white elephant driven (occasionally) by enthusiasts. Sounds like a future classic to me?

A classic car can be defined a one which gives all the pleasure of standing in a cold shower tearing up £50 notes.

Count me in!!

In a road full of mediocrity, at least our cars are exciting. My kids don't call it the "Rocket Car" for nothing.

Stig - sorry mate, it's impossible not to look gay in an MX5!
