Free Practice Saturday 26th
Conditions: Dry, 12ºC
A session saw Tom Ferrier second fastest in the first free practice session for rounds 5 and 6 of the 2008 British GT Championship at Rockingham.
Oil pressure problems restricted the running of with the #9 car, but early signs were good Leo and Peter running similar times.
Free Practice Sunday 27th
Conditions: Wet, wind NE 10 mph, 12ºC
8 Oliver Morley made a tentative start to practice in his first wet outing in the Gallardo, running 13th for most of the session with 1:37's.
9 Jason Templeman ran most of the session in the #9 car with early running at 3rd, but overall finishing in 8th.
As it was the team's first running in full wet conditions with the Lamborghini Gallardo several different setup options were tried to develop a configuration for qualifying.
Tom Ferrier and Leo Machitski ran shorter sessions towards the end of practice as they have had more experience in the cars than their partner drivers.
Qualifying 1 - Very wet, wind NE 15 mph, 12ºC
The Tech 9 team entered their first qualifying in wet conditions for the first time with the Gallardo.
8 Oliver Morley and #9 Leo Machitski starting the session and both set times well clear of the rest of the field with 1.36sec pace.
After 5 laps the cars were running P1 and P2 continuing to improve their times and clear of the rest of the field by some margin. Clearly the setup adjustments made from the practice seasons had dramatically improved the cars potential.
And the good laps continued with Tech 9 achieving the first Gallardo front row in British GT history, with Leo on poll and Oliver 2nd.
Qualifying 2 - Very wet, wind NE 15 mph, 11ºC
After the fantastic achievements of Qualifying 1 the team quickly focussed on the task in hand switched the drivers over and got the cars to the front of the pit lane to ensure early traffic free lapping in Qualifying 2.
8 Tom Ferrier and 9 Jason Templeman left the pit at the the start of qualifying and immediately set good out laps. Jason span on his second lap and was forced to pit to all the car to be checked.
Jason then went out with clear instruction from Phil Hindley that he has poll-capable car under him. The instructions were followed an Jason quickly set the fastest laps of the session so far and took a provisional poll position after 12 minutes.
Both cars again set leading times, but where joined by the 21 Gallardo of Team Modena with consistent laps in the 1:36's.
With 3 minutes of the session remaining the grid was 9 Templeman, 21 Johnson/Jones and 8 Ferrier. Tom made a last push to try and repeat the all Tech 9 front row but despite setting some good sector times wasn't able to improve upon P3.
So with an exciting couple of qualifying sessions the Tech 9 Team has again demonstrated its ability to compete and lead the field.
With only 1 hour to prepare for the first race Phil reminded everyone that qualification is important, but its the race that matters most. The team got straight back to work and looking eagerly forward to what is undoubtedly going to be a eventful wet race.
Join us again later to find out how we got on.

Race 1 (Round 5) - Very wet, wind NE 20mph, 11ºC
Race 1 of the weekend followed quickly qualifying and was to start in worsening rain under the safety car. Thankfully after 2 laps the Clerk of the Course was happy it was safe enough to commence racing.
The team was excited about the race as P1 and P2 start gave the team the best chance of a good result. The race however was to demonstrate the how narrow the margins between success and failure are in motorsport.
9 Leo Machitski managed the field well and pulled a good lead over the line. 8 Oliver Morley had a less successful first lap and lost a place to the 40 Viper of Gornall/Barnes in the complex.
On lap 3 the #9 car developed a gear selection problem and began to lose places. Despite going through the reset routines Leo could not get the gear change to work properly and was forced to pit on lap 5 and this turned into a retirement. The problem later being diagnosed as water ingress into the gear selection pump.
And whilst the team attended to the 9 car, things were going wrong on circuit as Oliver aquaplaned on turn in and the car spun, not being able to rejoin safely until 18th.
So a fantastic position at the head of the field had disappeared in 5 laps. One car out and the other facing a hard race to regain places.
Oliver was lapping in the 1:37's matching the pace of the front runners but the gap was significant and we needed something significant to challenge for places. Something like the Safety Car being deployed just after we had made the driver change.
The opportunity we needed happened as all of the other teams began to pit under safety car, however things were not as we anticipated and the safety car didn't allow Tom to pass and unlap himself. Confusion reigned as the lead Viper was in the pits.
The Safety Car was returned after 3 laps and the timings screens began to catch-up with those on out laps. To the team's frustration Tom was classified 1 lap down in 14th!!!
A enquiry with the Clerk of the course to clarifying the situation, but they considered the position to be accurate.
This left Tom with a mountain to climb and he set about his task with aplomb in his well known style.
A commendable run for the rest of the race saw Tom move to 10th overall included a great tussle with 23 Simonsen to defend 10th.
So a real roller-coaster of a day with the high's of a first Tech 9 Gallardo front to the disappointment of the early stages of the race.
We will back again tomorrow to run Race 2 (round 6) at 1325 BST.
