Private Plate dilema!
Discussion
Hi all,
I have a 94m Chim with a standard reg.Through work i have the oppurtunity to have MBZ1661 for the cost of transfer £80. In the past i have considered these plates to be a bit tacky but am very tempted because of cost and hiding my cars age.Once i have agreed to the plate it must go on the car and i can't sell it on for a while. wot do you think guys shall i do it?

I think personally that these el cheapo Irish plates look..... well, el cheapo. If you have to have a PP there are loads on the DVLA site for £250 all in that would look better.
You see lots of old Mercs driving round with the MBZ plates and I think it looks cheap even on them.
Just MHO.

It seems as though you're interested in it only becasue it's cheap, not because you actually like it.
It would have some value to a Merc owner of that persuasion - so how come the owner doesn't wnat the commercial rate? And why can't you sell it on straightaway? It doesn't even have to go on the car; you could keep it on retention.

I cant sell it straight away as it comes from a car p/ex at work and could be considered as taking potential profit away from dealership. Was thinking of buying a 3 x 3 plate later but cant afford at the moment. thought this would be a cheap temp solution.

I have just bought a £250 plate from DVLA just as a personalised touch on the chimaera. Personally i couldnt give a rats a*se about people knowing the age of my car - in fact in the S i used to surprise people in their "sports cars" when an "old" S went flying past them and found that quite amusing.
I bought the personalised plate to make the car personal. So it has my initials on it, wouldnt bother with a plate that meant nothing to me or anyone else even if it hides the age.
shame my initials are nob

Why should Merc’ owners put an MBZ plate on their car? Z types are made by BMW and if spaced out like MB Z1234 would look even more dodgy.
Must confess I always assumed these Mercs’ with Irish plates were chaps over from the “Emerald Isle” doing a bit of drive laying & tarmac’ing for the summer. Perhaps I wrong all this time and they really are "prestige" plates?
Rich...

Rich... I'd NEVER fit a private plate.
It's too easily remembered by:
1. the bloke you cut up by mistake last week.
2. people who see it parked somewhere... when it should be somewhere else!
3. anybody who doesn't like you.
The only "vanity plate" I'd buy, would be the one that had been proven to be forgotten after 2 seconds.

I've got T 5 LTR on my Griff 500 and wife has D1 4LFA on her Alfa, both £256 from the DVLA when we bought the cars. Rich...I've never really liked personal plates thinking theyr'e a bit pretentious (oops, just insulted half the TVR owners on here) BUT when I got my Griff last year with A6 TVR on some people seemed more impressed with the plate than the car!!! Sadly, it wasn't my plate to keep...was it some lucky bugger on here that bought it (I hear you got a bargain!).
Doesn't really answer your question but I wouldn't stick a meaningless one on the car just because its free...
