Silverstone f1 testing in June - now £12

Oh dear, gone are the days of arriving at the circuit on the morning of a test and just walking in for free. Its £12 now AND you have to book and pay in advance.
What on earth is all that about? F1 is getting way too greedy! Yes I know £12 isn't a vast amount of money but its just the principle of the thing. A free test day would be a nice way of giving something back to the fans. But we all know how that is a big fat no-no in the modern greed orientated world of F1.
Maybe if I dressed in an SS uniform I would get in free?
Any ideas anyone?

It's an absolute bargain for watching F1 cars all day.
Compare that to a GP weekend. That's more a joke. I was thinking of going on Saturday but even for qualy and practice that £60. Could be more of a bargain because that's the race over and done with!

Best option is to find the unofficial test days. The reason they have capitalised on this I believe is that it is often an "all teams" test, it allows teams to provide some hospitality to their small technical partners (I mean the company I contract to has a technical partner status with Renault - and I seem to remember them having an auction for test day hospitality passes for charity) and of course it is still a relatively cheap way to see the top names hammering a F1 car round a track.
Then of course there are enough bobble-hatters out there who will pay to see their team/racing hero
I prefer to get my ear to the ground for the unpublicised tests ... and where possible blag it into the paddock area.

I was under the impression that although you can book in advance you don't have to and that tickets are still available on the gate.Marc W said:

I was under the impression that although you can book in advance you don't have to and that tickets are still available on the gate.to be fair i agree that if it keeps teh GP at silverstone (though why that is ever in doubt amazes me) then i am happy to pay. furthermore, in recent years silversotne have recognised that if people are paying they have to offer a little bit more than the terrace concrete steps at woodcote thus there is access to the uncovered grandstand opposite the pits which is a good view, the covered grandstand at woodcote and access to the terrace near the braking area of Copse. they have employed a few people to look after the car park, personally all these things make a bit of a difference, they also open up all the toilets, get some catering and open the shop and get some commercial vendors in too behind the woodcote grandstand. ok, its all to take more money off you but at least its somewhere to have a wander during the lunch break and if you have always wanted that 1:12 scale model of Ivan Capelli's Leyton House March......
cars run from 10 to 4ish with an hours lunch break and if the weather is good its rare to find anything more than five minutes without a car on track unless someone bins it.
i guess because it was free, people will complain but silverstone have at least done a few things to help the punter, there is a commentator of sorts etc. i would happily pay £25 if they opened up the whole ciruit but i guess the costs for security would go up too. there is nothing better than walking round a race circuit and taking all day to do it, watching cars at various corners throughout the day.

In the past I have always waited until just before to decide which days I am going to depending on the weather as they don't usually run very much if its raining, but now I am forced to choose a day in advance and hope for the best. This could mean paying £12 to stare at an empty wet track all day.
Also alot of the improvements mentioned were already in place when it was free. The Teams pay quite high fees for testing and this always covered the costs of everything. It's not like they are even going to make much money from charging, certainly nowhere near enough to enable them to definitely keep the GP, which Bernie could still take away from them no matter what they do if he thinks he has a better offer.Edited by Marc W on Friday 30th May 12:57
