I know that red cars (particularly Vauxhalls – I always seem to notice red astras as some of the worst examples) are notorious for suffering from fading paintwork over time due to exposure to sunlight. However thinking that as the monaro comes from down under then the paintwork would be something “special” I thought I may be worrying unduly. But having looked at the paint up close now I’m not so sure as the quality doesn’t look that great.

Any views?

don't buy a red one then, especially a non metallic, otherwise it will look like a council estate Calibra in 5 years!

A mate and I bought our red VN's together in the early 90's. I had polished mine every month, and he didn't do anything to his. Was remarkable how different they looked after I got rid of it after 14 years. Mine was in very good nick, and his was pretty shabby and very dull. I think it is pretty imporant to make sure the car's are polished (reminds me need to get mine done now that the weather is getting slightly better). It adds that extra level of protection. As far as I know, the metallics get and extra coat of clear paint, whereas the flat colours don't.

This is mine at just under 3 years old

It isn't garaged.

Just takes some TLC that's all.

Why do they have colour tinting lenses?
The "new" red colour of the Astra's etc is cr@p. Let's be honest could you get a better colour than dirty orange?? The old Opel Manta's had a similar red/er/orange hue. If you're going to do red then make it as bright as possible ('cos is IS gonna fade over time!!)
comments glady accepted.....

Thought you were joking about it looking orange (as so red!) so apologies for first reply. I am rather concerned now as GM red is indeed red to me and to all I have now asked since your reply. I have 2 red Holdens and they also are as red as the car pictured, not a hint of orange. Have you considered that you might be seeing it a little differently? See the section 'The Yellow Problem' in the attached link. Some researchers believe that people with red green colour vision deficiency actually see shades of beige, yellow or orange in place of red and/or green.

Not a flame, best wishes.
