Hi
iam noticing a petrol smell walking past my wedge ('87 350i). I have replaced the swirl pot with an alloy one from RTR, replaced the pipes to the tank and replaced the fuel filter and pipes. I can't see any obvious leaks. The smell isn't in the car, definitely around the o/s rear wheel. Are wedges prone to leaks/rotten tanks or have i missed something? The fuel/return pipes to the engine look to be in good condition and are stamped 2005.

More than likely the tank vent pipe. On my 400 its on the nearside, always get a wiff of fuel when by it.

Worth double checking what it is though.

Check the corners of the tanks, they do go there.

The smell shouldn't be too bad, but...
The fuel filler hose and/or gaiters used, can perish. If you unkowningly spill petrol on the outside of the filler hose it will smell for ages.
And overfilling sends petrol into the overflow hose and the petrol should drop behind one of the rear tyres....
