Yes I'm not taking the mick. The picture story will be on my website www.gbsportscar.com later this weekend if possible, but a summary here for anyone tackling this weekend like me.

You may have read on the other thread I need a gearbox overhaul due to mainshaft bearing failure. Started getting box out today stopped now as not feeling too well and need my strength to actually drop box, which is where I am now with all ancilliaries stripped and removed.

Took over and hour and a half to remove the exhaust (custom system) due to height I could (or couldn't) get the car too. However once off moved onto prop shaft. wedged shaft using a screwdriver and undid the four bolts at the differential flange. Pushed prop shaft forward and cleared central nut. Sure enough I didn't have the free room to draw the shaft backwards and clear the splined output shaft from the box (although checked when I had the body off over winter I forgot about the fuel pipe and non return valve which gets in the way).

So I remembered this statement

When I had to do that job I found the same issue - prop shaft is apparently impossible to wiggle out of the chassis. I ended up phoning the S Series technical help guy through the TVR Car Club, and he was great. I think he was in the middle of a kids' party but took the trouble to help me out, and was able to remember that it is necessary to un-bolt the top of the diff from its support bracket. The front of the diff then dips down and lets you take the prop shaft out.

Easy when you know how!
in this thread

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0... so had a quick look and undid the two 17mm bolts running through the rubber bushes between the differential mount and the chassis. The whole diff and mount drop at the front by about 3 inches and the prop flange slides nicely over the top of the differential and then drops out of the chassis.

Easy when you know how.

BTW the rear diff mount on mine is the U shaped one from the Sierra (not like the one on Barkychocs car pictured here http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0...

Chris, As I said above yours is different, this technicque applies to those fitted with th U shaped sierra rear diff mount like this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SIERRA-COSWORTH-7-5-inch-SAP...

which is all bar the V8S I understand. BTW these dif mounts are no longer available anywhere (I got one of the last four from TVRcar parts and they appear to have sold out since then.

Mark

BTW the story and pictures are now on www.gbsportcar.com

Well this will make you pig sick anyway.

The V8S Prop has a flange at both ends.
The Prop is telescopic, unscrew the locking ring and the 2 ends push towards each other and out it comes.

Easy Peasy!

Chris,

It's interesting that the diff mounting arrangements are different, I would expect the props to be as, I assume, the V8 has a different gearbox to the V6 type 9 to allow it to mate with the Rover engine?, but I thought the diffs were the same, just some with and some without limited slip option (mine is without - V8S were all with I think) indeed looking at your diff mounting arrangement in the previously listed thread it mounts to the diff in the same place as mine does with the two large central bolts, but your has four extra smaller bolts, 2 to each side mounting the rubber bushes to the diff (my diff looks externally identical to yours, and even has the threaded holes in the same place as the smaller bolts on yours but on mine they just secure the rear cover to the rest of the diff body), However, the mount to the chassis is very different.

Wonder why they changed this - does anyone know? and is it specific to the V8S or are LSD V6 diffs mounted in this way?

Hey Mark

Never mind eh ? rolleyes

this is great info for those who follow and need to do theirs... I think this should be a "How To" on here or perhaps on Pies site (how about it Colin ?)

Kevin,

There is a "how to" on my site now with pictures. Although I am now really struggling getting the bloody box out, think I need to tip the engine more to clear the mount part of the chassis as the box won't withdraw inside the chassis far enough to clear the input shaft.

Stopped for lunch now - need another bloke to help rather than my son whi is still learning (slowly)

The V8 has a Rover gearbox - I wondered if the mounting change was to handle the extra power and prevent the diff moving - those rear mounts on the V8 really have very little movement.
The diff does look the same as the V6 cars I've seen and is a ford item.

How's your son getting on - has he learnt the special words yet censored that make difficult jobs go so much better!
