Whining diff . . . . .
Discussion
I've just come back from a great track evening at donnington park. It was awesome....
but,
as I pulled out the circuit to go home I noticed that there was a whining noise coming from the diff area whenever I was coasting, as soon as power was applied it stopped.
Its not the gearbox as this happens both in and out of gear.
Anybody know what this might be ? Is it something I can repair or replace myself ?
Thanks
Paul.

Could be the wheel bearings - does the noise change on bends?
A lot of older Chimaeras and Griffs are needing diff rebuilds now - mine was done last year and if you do a search you'll find a load more. Unless you're a pretty competent home mechanic type I'd leave it to a specialist.
Check there is oil in it - if you can reach the filler.

Hi Paul,
I had this exact same problem a couple of months back. At first I though it was just a noise I'd never heard before but had always been there. But over the course of a couple of weeks it got louder. It sounded a bit like the noise you get when in reverse, or an Austin Metro gearbox makes all the time!!
Turned out to be the bearing on the diff. I got Top Cats in Aylesbury to replace them, cost about £500.
Hope you get it sorted
