I am considering buying a 2nd hand tourareg, have looked them up on honest john and love the look of them for a 4x4. I will prob go for the 2.5ltr diesel for economy, but was wondering others thoughts (mainly owners or people in the business that have driven them)with the rising rate of diesel (around £1.25 where i am) is it worth while getting the diesel over the 3.2 v6 petrol? What does the different models cost to tax and run on a daily basis? Ive drive xc90's and liked them, but the vw appeals to me much more. Any info on buying tips/running costs would be much appreciated! ta

The 3.0 diesel is a better engine to go for, later design, more power and better economy. IIRC the 2.5 is old technology. Petrol will be very thirsty in such a heavy vehicle.

I would rather get a 3ltr but dont have 20k to spend. Im looking at 15-16k max.

The petrol ones would obviously be thirsty, but im thinking with the extra cost of diesel over petrol, and the fact that the diesels dont do much more than 25mpg anyway, the petrol probably wouldnt cost me much more than a few hundred quid extra per year (ave 12k miles pa), but would sound nicer, and be quiter on a long run.

Tax bands for them all seem to be similar looking at the parkers guide. The v10 diesel would be nice, but a bit silly i think! lol!

The fuel economy on the 3.2 V6 is no better than the 4.2 V8, because it needs to be worked harder.

Don't forget that the desirability and saleability of the petrol models is at an all time low...

These cars are very sensitive to spec also, you should insist on a Sport model with sat nav and a good selection from the options list.

The 2.5 TDI is alright, nothing special but very rattly at low speed. 3.0tdi is a cracker of an engine (as mentioned above, new tech vs. old) and should hold its value much better as a result. If you can stretch to it (or even one with a few more miles) the 3.0 is the pick of the range.

There are a couple of milers in the 16s on Auto Trader.

All large thirsty cars/4x4's values are falling through the floor. Hang on for a couple of months and you will easily get a 3.0ltr with in budget. Another poster on the Porsche forum mentioned that he saw an ML go through the auctions last week for 2,700GBP. The price slide will continue as many stealers including BMW, VW & Merc main franchise's are having to push stock through the auctions as they are not selling quick enough.

As has been said...the v6 TDI is the engine to go for....the 4 pot is pants! (relativley)

Its an awsome car and wont disapoint, however, dont expect the tyres to last more than about 12k at best!

Go for a petrol V8 one.... cheaper to buy as the market doesn't like them, quicker, quieter, and the economy difference is so slight that the cost delta between diesel and petrol will just about wipe it out!

I have just taken in a 2.5 5 cylinder in part ex.
Very good spec, Nav, heated leather, chrome pack, well made, fairly good on fuel 27/35mpg for a large heavy auto. Likewise the V6 is the engine to have, however most are in the 16/18k plus price.
Stood the 116,000 miles very well. Will be up for grabs for £13,000 very soon.
Ring me if you need any info

Looking for exactly the same thing myself. Must have a towbar for moving my boat and it looks like leather is a must have. Doesn't seem to be any saving at all between dealer prices and private sales though.

Not a bad idea with an LPG conversion

I had a Jeep Cherokee about 5 years ago with LPG.

Reduced range meant having to plan every long journey to take in stations that had a tank.

And I was never 100 percent on the filling nozzle, always got a lung full of gas when releasing the coupling.
