The 111S is a K-series VVC. The 111R is the Toyota.

There was no change over point as such, the two cars were produced in parallel.

I'm sure exactly when the change over was, but a 111s is a K series & an Elise S is a toyota, and is no longer a 111s. I'm pretty sure that's the case anyway.

Close and but not quite. Lotus' daft and continuously variable naming policy strikes again. There was a 'k' engined plain 'S' produced circa 03-04. Basically it was the 120bhp K series but with the trim packages renamed from Sports Tourer and Race Tech to align with the 111S and plain Jane 111 (of which they sold only a handful). Basically the 'S' version had carpets and a couple of other trim niceties and the non 'S' cars didn't. They then started faffing about with touring packs etc and the randomness and confusion continued.

Quite right that a '111s' will always be a k series and the easiest way to tell apart a k plain 'S' from a toyota one (notwithstanding the visual clues - exhaust position being the biggie) is the age.

What age? Cant always look at exhausts on adverts, so precisely when did they change over?

2005 I think would have been the last year you could buy a new K. if the ad says 111S then it is a K.

elise S 2006 I'm sure would be the lower powered Toyota engine.

Elise S from 2006 is Yota, as was said earlier there was a gap of a few years before the S came back in the lineup - Same time the 111R became the R.
