Just bought a 2007 RS4 Engine... should be with me by the weekend bounce

Any mileage in hanging onto the original ECU - can they be 'significantly' reprogrammed?

mind if I ask what sort of price you paid for it / what condition?

I've not yet seen it in the flesh Davi, but have been told it's A1. Certainly looks A1 from the pics.

I noticed on another RS4 thread that some were advocating the use of Audi trannies for this engine... other than the 'fit' is there any other benefit to this over the G50?

afraid I can't help much with that one in relation to dropping in an ultima - I was looking at one for my own design rather so my input would be fairly useless to you. That said I was looking at the Audi box, though a diesel 2WD one - I've heard stories on other forums about converted 4WD ones going pop due to inherent weaknesses created by removing the rear output & diff. If you can't get the answers you want here, it's worth looking at the GT40 Forums for another source. I like the Audi box overall, and the fact you know it'll mate up without any modification at all plus not running it upside down - if you aren't going silly on the power it seems like a plan to me!

I would wait until you have the engine in the car before working out which box to go with. Ideally you should be aiming to get the output shafts to the wheels close to in line with the wheel centre. This will give the least amount of losses through the CV joints and highest longevity. I believe that the Audi box (and Subaru) will have the output shafts below the input shaft. A Porsche G50 when inverted as ultimas normally do, will have the output shaft above the input shaft.

The benefit of using the G50 may be that you can get the engine lower in the car, thus lowering the centre of gravity of the car and helping the handling.

Cheers.

I have a G50 lying about, so that would probably be the best way forward.

Was wondering about the RS4 box itself though. Not sure how easy (make that difficult) it would be to do away with the rear diff output 'stuff', or whether the front output could cope with handling all the engine power on it's own.

Any gearbox experts out there?

Or can anyone recommend any gearbox experts to call?

Why not try to sell the box on and get a 2wd box?
Try this thread, the guy 'hilly' transplanted an Audi + box into an Esprit, gives you dims as well.

Found hilly's 'build' web site. . .. if you have a day to spare makes good reading and very informative.

If you don't mind doing a bit of engineering and have a G50 lying around I'd use that as it will lower the CG and probably take more power out of the box.

The benefit of using the Audi box is that it simply bolts on and you can use the clutch starter etc etc.
