The backwards compatability is patchy on PS3 due to cost-cutting.

could be wrong but i think there are backwards compatability differences between the 60gig and 40gig models

Check the list of compatible games, half of mine don't work and the ones that do almost always have the odd bug here and there, Kingdom Hearts 2 being one memorable example as there was a boss that was impossible to beat due to a problem with the software emulation.

I thought it was only the initial 60GB PS3 that was backwards compatible, not the newer 40GB one?

Can you confirm that you are playing PS1/PS2 games on a newer 40GB PS3? If you are, then I better get in the loft and get some of mine out to try them biggrin

Forget that! Just found it still supports PS1 games. Better get in the loft and rescue all my FF games along with the few others I have hanging around biggrin

Kris, just dragged my copy of FFVIII out of the loft, and mind doesn work either. I know there was problems with getting it working when they were developing the PS emulator for the GP2X. Lots of other games worked fine, but there were a number of problems with getting FFVIII working on it. They got it partly working, but from what I recall, it was never completely working. I've not checked whether they did get it working in the end and sort of lost touch with the GP2X scene (although still have mine upstairs).

I guess we'll need to wait (and hope) for a software emulation update that will support it.

Just checked the code on my version, and it too doesn't match. Mine is 2080 not 2084 as mentioned on the above link.

I would imagine if the serial code you have isn't on the list then it doesn't work full-stop. The ones on the list are the ones that do work, even if some of them play with serious issues.

See my quote above, it won't work. The fact that Sony has removed all backwards compatibility for the PS2 from the 40gb model shows just how much they care about providing backwards compatibility for their old games. If they've removed it for the PS2 then I can't see them deciding to update the software for the PS1 for a couple of games.

Your best bet is either to source a PS1 cheap or try some emulation on a PSP.
