When the engine is running, especially when cold, there is a lot of noise from either the air conditioning compressor or the alternator. Does the belt on the front of the engine just drive the air conditioning compressor? If so is it ok to remove it to stop the compressor working?

I've just taken mine off and am waiting for a new one.

The alternator belt is separate, as it is located centre way on top of the engine.
