cant select 5th gear!

Went off to derby at the weekend, covered about 250 miles then for no apparent reason couldnt get 5th gear, there was no grinding, no stiffness of gear selection and no trouble selecting any other gears. Any one got any ideas or am I looking at a garage job!?

I had exactly this problem with my Tuscan 2... one minute fine, the next no 5th. It turned out to be a worn brass bush...it's been fine since this was replaced. I can't remember exactly what it was called but it was fixed by David Gerald - I'm sure they would give you more detail. If you would like me to I'll give them a call and find out what the part was.

I had the same problem. After much head scratching, I realised I had a lighter jammed between the gear lever and the right-hand side of the gear-stick/handbrake surround.....



seriously though, sounds like the weak 5th gear circlip/bush thingy is suspect...

Netnewt, if you'd do that i owe you! went onto the Tuscan site and it was listed as a common problem so im not to worried now, thought a massive bill was on its way!! Cheers guys.

circlip / spring washer wears and lets 5th gear go lose, if u r lucky its an uprated bush and circlip, otherwise worse case its fith gear. Either way rebuild is less than £500. Done quite a few of these

Hi Cerbykev, sorry I took so long. They replaced the 5th gear syncro hub, cone and fork. Initially just the cone, but again after a few days I suddenly lost 5th. So they replaced the whole thing - hub and fork. They did this some time ago now and it's been fine. Total cost of the parts was about £200.
