Hi,
I'm looking for the best compact camera for around the £200 mark, but don't know too much about them...
I've seen a 12.1 Mega pixel in Dixons, but is this what I should be looking for? Any advise is much appreciated.
Thanks.

I have a Sony DSC W90 which I took to travelling round NZ and OZ and it took some really great shots. It's got an 8.1mp sensor, it's compact, very easy to use and the battery life is good, can't think of what more you could ask for in a point and shoot camera. I think that Sony are revamping their range at the moment so there may be some good deals out there on the outgoing model.

P.S. No, I don't work for Sony, just think it's a great bit of kit.

The more pixels you have, the worse it will be. Strange but true.

The Panasonic range is worth considering.... here's one of their best ones.

If you can get a look at a canon powershot then do, they are excellent bits of kit. Actually any of the compacts are great these days but pretty much all will suffer from slight shutter lag. What differentiates each camera is the software they ship with. To put it bluntly Canons shipped software is bloody fantastic

I think the point is trying to cram so many pixels into such a small sensor means you lose quality. Look at a 12.1mp compact then compare to a 12.1mp cropped slr then to a full frame 12.1. The same number of pixels but the size is obviously bigger at each sensor for each pixel so the colour and information in each pixel is stronger

I'm in the same situation. I think I'm going for a Panasonic TZ5. Its an update on the TZ3, which I have seen several friends use. For me the only downside is that there is no view finder. But as I'm looking at a camera to carry around in my bag , as an everyday camera, it should compliment my Nikon D300 well
Good Luck

Personally i wouldnt go to any high street shop, you will get better deals online. If you want some idiot on comission to sell you what he thinks is best the go to a shop, from experiance, do your homework, and know the features your after.
Pixels, Size, the card it comes with, Modes.

I keep saying it i think the Fuji series are cracking camera with all the features of an SLR, but without changable lenses.

Saw this in Pc World, for £190, online £150.

Another point, memory cards... 1 compact flash card for my camera, jessops, £45, online 2 for £20.

Bear in mind these arnt really "compact" ie wallet sized. But excellent for the money, normally much better zoom.

Glad to hear it. A 6Mp camera gives an image about 3,000 pixels wide. If you think that the human eye can only resolve about 150ppi, that gives a print width of 20" before you notice any significant loss in resolution. Cram more pixels into a tiny sensor and they get smaller, making them less sensitive to light and the whole thing goes tits up from there.
